Inleiding
Entree in de vijfde as. Zesruits schuifvensters.

- de functie (sedert 1606 opvang weeskinderen, later en in het verlengde daarvan opvang van jeugd die speciale zorg behoeft) en het bijbehorende bouwtype;
- bouwtype en -stijl, een qua hoofdvorm gematigde variant van de Hollandse neoranaissance, relatief rijk uitgevoerd en voorzien van elementen zoals het dakhuis;
- het oeuvre van de architecten;

Description
Introduction
The Breda orphanage originates from 1606 and the institution has functioned to the present day (2002) as such or in direct continuation thereof. The building, however, dates from 1887-1889. The regents resolved on 31 January 1887 on the 'establishment of an entirely new building'. After some tussle over the precise placement of the front door (in the middle or not) the design by architects P. van de Erve and A.C. Buijzerd was approved and immediately put in hand. The historic regents' and regent-women's chambers were dismantled and reinstalled in the new building. In 1888 the building was delivered and finishing work could begin - including the aforementioned chambers, by carpenter De Rouw. On 1 May 1889 children and staff moved into the building.
Description
Main form: Brick building of two storeys and roof on approximately rectangular plan, the long facade situated on the Kloosterplein. Hipped roof with flat, covered with pantiles.
Facades: The front facade has nine bays (not all of equal width), of which the two middle ones are set back somewhat. Entrance in the fifth bay. Six-paned sash windows. The three left bays are crowned by a roof dormer with scrolls and a broken pediment. The building has a strong horizontal articulation with painted band courses and string courses; further corner and closing stones and arch drums in neoreaissance style. The rear and gable-end facades are considerably more soberly executed. On the front facade the inscription 'Ren - God is een Vader der Weezen - 1887'.
Interior: Via a T-shaped corridor, paved with marble gravestones and furnished with a foundation stone, the various rooms are accessed. Amongst others a historic staircase. On the front side to the right are located the regents' and regent-women's chambers.
The regents' chamber has gilded leather wall hangings (supplied in 1762 by a Breda saddlemaker), wainscoting, decorative ceiling and chimney-piece with coat of arms (all in Louis XIV style of c. 1725). In the chimney-piece tiling (c. 1900). Furthermore a mirror (c. 1725) and an overdoor panel (second half of the 17th century) depicting a peasant feast.
The regent-women's chamber also has wainscoting, decorative ceiling and chimney-piece (last quarter of the 18th century, sober Louis XVI style), in the chimney-piece tiles (c. 1900). Large wall paintings by the Breda artist J.H. Frederiks (1751-1817), executed 1787. Also a chimney-piece and overdoor panel (grauwtje) of his hand.
Fencing Along the front a wrought-iron fence.
Assessment
The Breda orphanage, a building from 1887-1889 built to the design of P. van de Erve and A.C. Buijzerd, is of general importance because of:
- the function (since 1606 care of orphaned children, later and in continuation thereof care for youth requiring special care) and the associated building type;
- building type and style, a temperate variant of Dutch neoreaissance in main form, relatively richly executed and furnished with elements such as the roof dormer;
- the oeuvre of the architects;
- the very important historic furnishings of the regents' and regent-women's chambers with amongst other things wainscoting, paintings and gilded leather.
