Inleiding

Introduction

CHURCHYARD CHAPEL with MORTUARY HOUSE and RAILINGS from 1898 in Neo-Gothic style, belonging to the already previously protected R.C. Church of the Assumption of Mary (monument number 30494) from 1887 by architect J.J. van Langelaar (pupil of Cuypers) on Brigidastraat 1 opposite. The design of the churchyard chapel is presumably also by Van Langelaar. The chapel stands in the middle of the central axis of the churchyard. The churchyard has a bent rectangular plan with the main entrance on Kerkstraat. The churchyard is a remnant of an older burial ground that lay around the medieval Church of Saint Brigida demolished in 1887.

On the east and south side of the churchyard a railing on a defensive wall.

The churchyard itself does not form part of the monument.

Description

The mortuary house forms with the open churchyard chapel on the west side a rectangular structure. It has a gabled roof covered with slate. The superstructure consists of fair-faced brickwork in header bond with natural stone quoins in the basement. The front facade consists of red machine-made brick, the side and rear facades of yellow-red hand-shaped brick. The front facade of the chapel has a wall opening with a pointed arch and a saddle-back as roof coping. Internally the shallow chapel is provided with a painting: below Christ on the cross flanked by Saints Mary and Mary Magdalen and above in the pointed arch the risen Christ with angels and several apostles. Between both images the Latin text: "Ego sum Resurrectio et vita". The painting was overpainted by Jan de K. and provided with the date 24 June 1990. The wrought-iron railing on a masonry defensive wall has at the street side at the corners a square masonry pilaster, further iron balusters with a French fleur-de-lis as a finial.

Valuation

Chapel and railings are of general importance. They have cultural-historical value as an example of Catholic burial culture. They are of architectural-historical importance as an example of the work of architect Van Langelaar. The whole has ensemble value in conjunction with the parish church and has been preserved in good condition.
