Iinleiding
De VILLA 'Salve Viator' staat aan de westelijke zijde van de Burgemeester Kerstenlaan, tegenover het Mastbos. De vrijstaande woning dateert uit 1932, is gebouwd in de stijl van het Functionalisme. Het gebouw, oorspronkelijk bewoond door een repatriant uit Nederlands-Indië, is een ontwerp van de architect Temme.
Het pand heeft de tand des tijds zonder ingrijpende wijzigingen doorstaan. Aan de noordelijke zijde is een eenlaagse, vlakgedekte garage aangebouwd.
Omschrijving
Het twee-, deels drielaagse pand heeft een samengestelde, globaal rechthoekige plattegrond en wordt gedekt door platte daken met een forse overstek.
De gevels zijn opgetrokken in bepleisterde baksteen en sterk geleed door uitspringende massa's, zoals de beide erkers en de markante, afgeronde schoorsteen. De asymmetrische voorgevel is aan de oostelijke zijde gesitueerd en heeft aan de linkerzijde een zeer forse eenlaagse, in plattegrond afgeronde erker met bovenliggend balkon. In de erker vier hoge achtruits ijzeren vensters en deuren. Op de verdieping geven openslaande achtruits ijzeren deuren toegang tot het balkon, dat voorzien is van een gesloten balustrade, waarop een buishek. Tegen de balustrade in metalen letters de naam van de villa: 'Salve Viator'. Rechts van de geprononceerde schoorsteen zowel op de begane grond als de etage een negenruits ijzeren venster met klein klapraam.
De noordelijke gevel is grotendeels blind. Hier bevindt zich de hal van het woonhuis, met voordeur en diep portiek, met een balustrade met natuurstenen deklijst. In het terugliggende gedeelte van de gevel de vensters van het trapportaal. In de achtergevel bevindt zich op de begane grond een reeks vensters met eenvoudige kruisvormige roedenverdeling. Tegen de zuidelijke gevel staat een tweede eenlaagse erker, eveneens voorzien van een balkon. Op de begane grond heeft de erker een openslaande deur naar het aansluitende terras, dat is voorzien van een vaste, uit de bouwtijd daterende bloembak op een gemetselde muur. De tuin wordt van de openbare weg gescheiden door een eenvoudig, laag ijzeren hekwerk.
Waardering
Het object is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarden: het is van belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, namelijk de stedelijke uitbreiding met villaparken in het groen. Het object heeft architectuurhistorische waarden: het is van belang voor de geschiedenis van de architectuur als voorbeeld van Functionalistische architectuur; daarbij is wel de vormentaal van het Nieuwe Bouwen overgenomen, maaar afgezien van grenen ramen en deuren geen vernieuwend materiaalgebruik toegepast. Introduction
The VILLA 'Salve Viator' stands on the western side of the Burgemeester Kerstenlaan, opposite the Mastbos. The detached residence dates from 1932, is built in the style of Functionalism. The building, originally inhabited by a repatriate from Dutch East Indies, is a design by the architect Temme.

Description
The two-, partly three-storey building has a composite, globally rectangular floor plan and is covered by flat roofs with substantial overhang.
The facades are constructed in rendered brick and strongly articulated by projecting masses, such as both bay windows and the distinctive, rounded chimney. The asymmetrical front facade is situated on the eastern side and has on the left side a very substantial single-storey, in plan rounded bay window with balcony above. In the bay window four tall nine-pane iron windows and doors. On the first floor sliding nine-pane iron doors give access to the balcony, which is provided with a closed balustrade, on which a tubular railing. Against the balustrade in metal letters the name of the villa: 'Salve Viator'. To the right of the pronounced chimney both on the ground floor and the upper storey a nine-pane iron window with small casement.
The northern facade is largely blank. Here is located the hall of the residence, with front door and deep porch, with a balustrade with natural stone coping. In the recessed section of the facade the windows of the stairwell. In the rear facade on the ground floor is a series of windows with simple cross-shaped glazing bars. Against the southern facade stands a second single-storey bay window, likewise provided with a balcony. On the ground floor the bay window has a sliding door to the adjoining terrace, which is provided with a fixed, dating from the period of construction, flower box on a brick wall. The garden is separated from the public road by a simple, low iron railing.

The object is of general importance. It has cultural-historical values: it is of importance as a distinctive expression of a socio-economic development, namely urban expansion with villa parks in green surroundings. The object has architectural-historical values: it is of importance for the history of architecture as an example of Functionalist architecture; whilst the formal language of the New Building has been adopted, apart from pine frames and doors no innovative use of materials has been applied.
