Inleiding
Het BEELD "de Turfschipper" uit 1926, van beeldhouwster Gra Rueb ('s-Gravenhage), staat centraal opgesteld op het Stadserf tussen de U-vormige uitbreiding van het stadhuis uit 1925 van de architect W.J. Hanrath. In 2004 is het beeld door vernieling zwaar beschadigd geraakt, waarna het is vervangen door een bronzen replica. Het originele beeld van rode terracotta is gerestaureerd en ondergebracht in het Bredaas Museum.
Omschrijving
Het beeldhouwwerk staat centraal op het met Quenast bestrate Stadserf tussen bovengenoemde gebouwen op een achtzijdige rode natuurstenen sokkel, die op zijn beurt op een eveneens achtzijdige bakstenen bloembak staat. Opschrift op sokkel: "De Turfschipper van Bergen uit Leur, die op 4 maart 1590 Breda hielp veroveren met zijn turfschip waarop 72 soldaten verborgen waren".

Het beeldhouwwerk is van algemeen belang. Introduction
The SCULPTURE "the Peat Barge Man" from 1926, by sculptress Gra Rueb ('s-Gravenhage), is centrally positioned on the Stadserf between the U-shaped extension of the town hall from 1925 by architect W.J. Hanrath. In 2004 the sculpture was severely damaged by vandalism, after which it was replaced by a bronze replica. The original sculpture in red terracotta has been restored and housed in the Breda Museum.
