Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The U-shaped extension in 1925-26 to the protected national monument no. 10175/10176 is constructed in Traditionalist style with Expressionist elements. The design is by architect W.J. Hanrath (Hilversum). The interiors of the western and southern wing do not fall within the protection.
Description
The extension of the town hall consists of three independent wings on a rectangular ground plan, comprising two storeys and entirely or partially cellared. Each wing has a steeply pitched composite hipped roof covered with grey Dutch bond tiles. The western or central wing is connected to the side wings by structures with flat roofs. On the north side is a two-storey connection with the main entrance of the marriage and council chamber in the middle. On the south side is a covered gateway beneath which is the main entrance to the police station.
The external masonry of front and side facades consists principally of red hand-formed brickwork laid in Flemish bond alternated by hardstone for platforms and steps at the entrances, and artificial stone for sills, gutters, wall cappings and levelling stones. The rear facades are laid in half-bond and have spout gables with brickwork infill. The wall openings have comb headers as spanning elements; some have a herringbone arch. These contain wooden cross windows and/or cloister windows with steel sashes and glazing bars. Varnished oak exterior doors.
The symmetrical front facade of each wing has two copper wall lanterns.
The southern wing has a five-bay risalit in the front facade beneath a spout gable containing the entrance section. On the edge of the hipped roof a dormer. On either side of the risalit a side wing beneath a flat roof. The western or central wing has an entrance section beneath a concrete canopy flanked by a date stone with above it a geometric fanlight with glazing bars. In the roof a spout gable. The northern wing has, at the location of the council and marriage chamber, a roof that steps up in height. The front facade contains a five-bay risalit, crowned by three stepped gables with a masonry spout. The windows below have a geometric fanlight. In the rear facade of the marriage chamber are five oval windows. In the side facade is the entrance to the public gallery of the council chamber.
This northern wing has a rich interior from the period of construction. The council chamber has an open oak roof truss structure, consisting of four arched trusses with corbel beams. The dado panelling, fixed wooden fittings, doors and parquet floor are executed with great craftsmanship. It contains furniture in oak designed by Hanrath, consisting of tables and twenty-six chairs, including five for the mayor and aldermen fitted with carved lion ornaments. The chamber contains two copper hanging chandeliers and sixteen wall sconces.
The stained glass windows and a mural are by Joep Nicolas (Roermond). The windows depict events from the history of the city. The large windows on the south side show:
1. "Anno MCDIL. Entry of the miraculous sacrament of Nieuvaert". To be seen are the transfer, the entry at the harbour and in the background the construction of the church tower, which according to tradition was built from the gifts of the pilgrims. Because Jan I van Nassau brought this sacrament into Breda, the city would have become an important place of pilgrimage.
2. "Anno MDCXXIV Spinola laid siege to the city". Around Breda, symbolised by an old depiction of the city coat of arms, Spanish troops are encamped.
3. "Tractatus pacis MDCLXVII". From the front of the town hall the peace between the Republic and England, concluded here after two years of war, is proclaimed. Bonfires are lit and wine spouts from the fountains, which symbolise the powers involved: on the left roses (England), an elephant (Denmark), on the right a lily (France) and the Dutch lion.
On the north side the windows are filled with the following depictions:
4. "MCCCCIII. The marriage of Engelbrecht II van Nassau and Johanna van Polanen establishes the bond between Nassau and Breda". The two main figures are accompanied by their coat of arms. However, the bridegroom was not Engelbrecht II, but Engelbrecht I.
5. "Philips the Handsome dispenses justice at the town hall Ve. Decembris anno Dni.MCDXCVI". The duke is depicted with the chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Apart from his coat of arms, Burgundy, those of two of his most important territories, Brabant and Holland, are included.
6. "In MDXXXIV by fire and plague this city was depopulated for 18 years and relieved of toll and tax". The charter of Charles V is read out amidst the flaming ruins; below one sees the firefighting work and the carrying away of plague victims.
7. "In MDXXXX René van Châlon received Emperor Charles V at the castle". On the left stands the prince, on the right the emperor; beneath the horses in the courtyard of the castle.
8. "MDLXVI four hundred nobles gather under Lodewijk van Nassau and Philips van Marnix to draw up the petition to Margaret of Parma". In the foreground the two leaders.
9. "The citizens under their mayor Godevaert Montens defend the city and town hall against the Spanish anno MDLXXXI". Montens and the citizenry take up arms under the princes' flag in the so-called fury of Haultepenne.
The mural painting from 1927 on the western wall of the chamber is an allegory of the Vondel motto: "The holy Concord is the Salt, that House and City keeps in Being". The hall, vestibule and staircase for the marriage and council chamber have marble floors and dado panelling. In the staircase are stained glass windows with allegories of the six virtues that good governance pursues. These windows are also by Joep Nicolas. They respectively represent: magnanimity, wisdom, prudence, fearlessness, justice, charity. To the left and right of the allegories Nicolas has painted on glass the coats of arms of the municipalities that together formed the old barony of Breda: on the left Breda, Dongen, Princenhage, Baarle Nassau, Chaam, Roosendaal, Alphen, Terheyden; on the right Oosterhout, Ginneken and Bavel, Etten Leur, Teteringen, Zundert, Rucphen and Sprundel, Rijsbergen and Gilze and Rijen. In the hall of this wing is a commemorative stone with the following inscription: "As a token of appreciation for the gifts bearing witness to great civic virtue and the administration of mayor van Sonsbeeck, which made possible this construction and fitting out of this part of the town hall by Master Builder J.W. Hanrath. The members of the council did cause this commemorative stone to be affixed on the day of the solemn inauguration, the 28th of the summer month MCMXXVI".
