Inleiding.

Architect Jos. Margry uit Rotterdam. Aannemer J.A. Vriens uit Moergestel. De kerk is georiënteerd. Kerkwijding vond plaats in 1922 door Mgr. Diepen.

Introduction.

R.K. CHURCH in the Neo-Gothic style from 1913. Dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua. Architect Jos. Margry from Rotterdam. Contractor J.A. Vriens from Moergestel. The church is oriented. Church consecration took place in 1922 by Mgr. Diepen. The building costs amounted to f 41,340.00. Of this f 25,000.00 was donated by J.P. Grewen, a wealthy shipping magnate and stockbroker from Rotterdam, who designated the Bishop of Den Bosch as his heir. By testament it was stipulated that his money should be used to build churches in honour of St. Anthony of Padua. In the Diocese of 's-Hertogenbosch sixteen churches were built in this manner. The front or west gable of the church faces the Biestsestraat. The accompanying presbytery is located on the south side of the church.

During the Second World War the church spire and part of the southern wall were damaged.

Description.

The church is a three-aisle cruciform basilica with a nave of three bays and a transept. On the west side a square tower with clock and bell-ropes flanked by staircase towers and pentagonal chapels. On the north side this is dedicated to St. Joseph and on the south side to St. Anthony of Padua. The presbytery choir is likewise flanked by pentagonal chapels. On the north side the baptism chapel and on the south side the Mary chapel. The sacristy is situated on the south-east side of the church.

Gabled roofs provided with chapel cross-beams. The side aisles have flat roofs. On the crossing of the church an eight-sided angelus tower with bell. The tower, staircase towers and chapels have spire roofs. All roofs are covered with natural stone slates.

The masonry consists of reddish-purple hand-formed brick laid in a stretcher bond pattern with natural stone applied for plinths and wall terminations.

Decoractive brickwork under eaves. Above the entrance portal a statue of the patron saint of the church. In the large pointed arch windows brick traceries.

In the presbytery choir seven stained glass windows. Three of these are in neo-Gothic style from 1913. Left: St. Juliana of Cornillon; centre: the Sacred Heart appears to Mary Magdalene Alacoque and right: St. Paschal Baylon. The other four from 1948 with representations of the four evangelists. The interior includes amongst others a neo-Gothic limestone baptismal font from circa 1913 with copper cover and a probably 16th-century Spanish wooden Mary statue.

Assessment.

The church is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical importance as a special expression of the development of Catholicism in the south and the formation of church villages at the beginning of the 20th century. It is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the village church. It has architectural-historical importance through the style and detailing and is also of importance as an example of the oeuvre of architect Margry. It has ensemble values because of its special setting, connected with the development of the church village. It has been preserved intact and is also of importance as an example of church-building activity financed from private sources and because of its inventory.
