Inleiding

Introduction

The DOUBLE DWELLING HOUSE was built in 1895, as part of the factory village established from 1892 by the brothers Dor for the benefit of the zinc factory they founded. The property stands on the corner of Hoofdstraat and Anton Stevensstraat.

Description

The double dwelling house consists of a three-storey transversely placed section under gabled roof, a slightly narrower one-and-a-half-storey section under gabled roof and following this a single-storey slightly narrower section likewise under gabled roof: both latter sections parallel to the street. The roofs have an overhang and are covered with newly improved Dutch roof tiles. The facades are built of red Belgian brickwork with dentil arches around the fanlights and relief brickwork on the highest building section. The walls are provided with straight relieving arches. The highest building section has on the right a widened new window and on the left a panel door with divided arched fanlight. On the floors above first two renewed roof windows with fanlight, in the attic six-light sash windows. The middle building section has on the right a panel door with divided arched fanlight and a widened new window on the left. Both this section and the lowest section are plastered and painted white. The side facades are blank, except for a small attic window on the left side.

At the rear facade of the highest building section the windows are staggered, with at the top an original arched six-light window and next to it an arched four-light window.

The layout of the remaining sections has been modified.

Valuation

The double dwelling house is of general interest. The building has cultural-historical importance as a distinctive expression of the socio-economic development of De Kempen, namely the establishment of factory settlements with dwellings for all social classes, it is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the workers' dwelling during industrialisation. The object is of architectural-historical importance through its style and detailing. It has ensemble values as part of a larger whole, the factory village Dorplein to be protected as a townscape. It is of importance because of its architectural-historical, constructional and typological rarity.
