DOMMELSTRAAT 9
Inleiding
Description
DOMMELSTRAAT 9
Introduction
Block-shaped BANK BUILDING, currently in use as office premises for various foundations, under a hipped roof with a flattened apex. The building is located on the corner of Dommelstraat and Raiffeissenstraat. It was built in 1910 to the design of architect J. Stuyt, using Classical elements for the decoration of the building (Um 1800 style). In the nineteen-thirties the building was extended; a block was added to the rear.
Externally, the same style as that of the main mass was maintained, and internally the 1910 building merges seamlessly with the 1930 extension.
Description
The building has two storeys and a basement. The symmetrical front facade is seven bays wide and has a three-bay-wide central risalit with a topped gable under a gabled roof. At the rear of the building is a round staircase tower with a spire.
The whole is executed in brick, with the basement marked by a natural stone drip moulding. The corners and the central risalit are provided with natural stone blocks up to this moulding, which above the drip moulding pass into brick blocks. The building is crowned by a rendered cornice above which a projecting gutter cornice is attached on corbels. The roof is covered with slate.
The main entrance is set back in the central risalit and is surrounded by a natural stone frame. This is crowned by a curved pediment with block dentil frieze. The windows are provided with small glazing bars. The basement is provided with cellar lights. In the topped gable is a large round window, this window is provided with a frame with natural stone garlands on either side. Coats of arms are visible above the window and garlands; they represent the Netherlands, the city of Eindhoven and the Cooperative Agricultural Associations. To the left of the risalit is an oval shield on which the building date (1910) is visible.
Roof dormers are placed at regular intervals in the roof plane. These are each provided with a pediment and wing pieces.
In the interior, various components of the original fittings have been preserved. Examples include the marble floor and tiled wainscot in the hall. In a number of rooms the original stucco ceiling and wooden wainscot are still present. Also noteworthy are the round arches in the hall at the location where the counters were originally situated.
