Inleiding
Het VERENIGINGSGEBOUW van het type zondagsschool, genaamd Eben Haëzer, is in 1885 gesticht door de familie Hooft. In 1912 bouwde de in dat jaar opgerichte Stichting Eben Haëzer het catechisatielokaal met beheerderswoning, die niet bij de bescherming betrokken zijn. In de jaren vijftig verbouwde de Stichting het verenigingsgebouw tot gymnastieklokaal en vergaderzaal. Al eerder was het gebouw als zodanig in gebruik. Door de weeks werd het pand gebruikt door jongens- en meisjesverenigingen. Ook in jaren zeventig hebben wijzigingen plaatsgevonden. In jaren tachtig is het verenigingsgebouw intern ingrijpend verbouwd onder leiding van architect J. de Jong te Woudenberg.
Het verenigingsgebouw is gesitueerd op de hoek van de Schoutstraat en de Middenstraat, met de nok evenwijdig aan de Schoutstraat. Op de hoek bevindt zich een ijzeren spijlenhek. Het pand is gelegen tegenover de in oorsprong Middeleeuwse, laat-gotische kerk.
Omschrijving
Het verenigingsgebouw is in schoonmetselwerk opgetrokken vanuit een rechthoekige plattegrond. Het pand van één bouwlaag heeft een zadeldak. De gevels in kruisverband hebben een rondom aangebrachte gecementeerde en geschilderde plint en de gevel aan de Schoutstraat is voorzien van geblokte hoeklisenen. De tuitgevels hebben geprofileerde deklijsten en een keperboogvormige tuit. Op de tuit bevindt zich een piron bestaande uit een bol met een siersmeedijzeren spits. De gevelschouders zijn verrijkt met convex- en concaaf gevormde randen. De langsgevels zijn afgesloten met lijstwerk en uitkragende gootlijsten.
De langsgevel aan de Schoutstraat (westzijde) is door geblokte pilasters in drie traveeën onderverdeeld. In de linker travee bevindt zich een licht getoogd venster onder strek met een zesruits houten T-schuifraam en met houten lekdorpel. In de twee andere traveeën bevinden zich dito vensters met kruiskozijnen waarin vijftienruits schuiframen geplaatst zijn.
De kopse gevel aan de Middenstraat (zuidzijde) bevat een getoogd driedelig venster onder anderhalve strek met door roeden verdeelde schuiframen en rondboogvormige bovenramen. De strek is uitgevoerd met gecementeerde aanzetstenen en ruitvormige verbindingsstenen. Daarboven bevindt zich een gestuukt spaarveld met geprofileerde rand waarin de naam 'Eben Haëzer' aangebracht is. In de top bevindt zich een cirkelvormig, gecementeerd venster met stalen rozet. Rechts bevindt zich een gemetseld tussenlid, waarin zich de oorspronkelijke entree bevindt, met keperboogvormige, gecementeerde afsluiting. Op de punt bevindt zich een metalen akroterie. De keperboogvormige entree bevat een deur met tweedelig bovenlicht. De keperboog is deels gecementeerd. De kopse gevel aan de noordzijde bevat twee vensters met zesruits schuiframen. In het midden bevindt zich een gestuukt spaarveld met geprofileerde rand met opschrift '1885' en daarboven een keperboogvormig venster met een stolpraam.
De langsgevel aan de oostzijde bezit een aantal aanbouwen.
Het interieur heeft diverse wijzigingen ondergaan.
Waardering

The ASSOCIATION BUILDING of the Sunday school type, named Eben Haëzer, was founded in 1885 by the Hooft family. Description
The association building is constructed in fair-faced brickwork on a rectangular floor plan. The building of one storey has a gabled roof. The cross-bonded facades have a cement-finished and painted plinth applied all around and the facade on the Schoutstraat is provided with rusticated corner pilasters. The spout gables have moulded cornices and a basket-arch-shaped spout. On the spout is a finial consisting of a sphere with ornamental wrought-iron spike. The gable shoulders are enriched with convex and concave moulded edges. The side facades are finished with moulding and projecting gutter cornices.
The side facade on the Schoutstraat (west side) is subdivided into three bays by rusticated pilasters. In the left bay is a slightly arched window under a simple lintel with a six-pane wooden sash window and with wooden drip moulding. In the two other bays are similarly placed windows with cross windows in which fifteen-pane sash windows are installed.
The end facade on the Middenstraat (south side) contains an arched three-part window under one-and-a-half-storey lintel with sash windows divided by glazing bars and round-arch-shaped fanlights. The lintel is executed with cement-finished setting stones and diamond-shaped bonding stones. Above this is a plastered spandrel field with moulded edge in which the name 'Eben Haëzer' is inscribed. At the top is a circular, cement-finished window with steel rose. To the right is a brick intermediate pier, in which the original entrance is located, with basket-arch-shaped, cement-finished closure. On the point is a metal acroterion. The basket-arch-shaped entrance contains a door with two-part fanlight. The basket arch is partly cement-finished. The end facade on the north side contains two windows with six-pane sash windows. In the centre is a plastered spandrel field with moulded edge with inscription '1885' and above it a basket-arch-shaped window with a fixed frame.
The side facade on the east side has a number of extensions.
The interior has undergone various alterations.
Valuation
The association building is of general importance owing to its cultural and architectural-historical value as an externally reasonably well-preserved example of an association building of the Sunday school type from 1885 in the Eclecticism style.
The association building has urban planning value owing to its character-defining location on the corner of the Schoutstraat and the Middenstraat, opposite the originally Medieval late-Gothic church.
