Inleiding
Spoorwegwatertoren behorend tot het stationscomplex Simpelveld.
De watertoren werd gebouwd in 1929. De toegepaste bouwstijl is Functionalisme. De watertoren werd gebouwd door aannnemer Meijer uit Kunrade ten behoeve van de zogenoemde Miljoenenlijn. In de onmiddellijke omgeving van de watertoren bevindt zich de plek waar oorspronkelijk de stalen draaischijf voor locomotieven was gesitueerd. Tevens bevindt zich hier een waterput met hierop een authentieke vulinstallatie voor het bijtanken van de waterreservoirs van locomotieven.
Omschrijving
Spoorwegwatertoren. De 9 meter hoge watertoren heeft een achtzijdige bakstenen onderbouw en een ver uitkragend betonnen reservoir zonder ommanteling. Metselwerk in kruisverband. Het betonnen reservoir heeft een plat dak. Een scheidingswand deelt het reservoir in twee compartimenten. Aan de buitenkant een stalen trap waarlangs men op het dak van het waterreservoir kan komen. In de onderbouw een rechthoekige stalen deur en een rechthoekig venster. In het interieur van de onderbouw is een kachel aanwezig die in de winter moest voorkomen dat het water in het reservoir zou bevriezen.
Het restant van de draaischijf voor locomotieven bestaat uit een grote ring gemetseld in baksteen met een hoogte van ongeveer twee meter en een doorsnede van ongeveer 15 meter, die deels boven het maaiveld uitsteekt. De waterput is vierkant van vorm met in het midden de metalen vulinstallatie bestaande uit een kolom van ongeveer vier meter hoogte met hieraan aan de bovenzijde een metalen buisarm.
Waardering
De spoorwegwatertoren met draaischijf, waterput en vulinstallatie bezit als onderdeel van het stationscomplex Simpelveld cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van een technische en typologische ontwikkeling. De watertoren bezit architectuurhistorische waarden wegens het bijzondere belang voor de geschiedenis van de bovenregionale architectuur en het bijzondere materiaalgebruik. Ensemblewaarde bezit de watertoren met draaischijf, waterput en vulinstallatie als essentieel onderdeel van het grotere stationscomplex met station, seinhuisjes en overige infrastructuur. De watertoren is tenslotte van belang wegens de hoge mate van architectonische gaafheid van ex- en interieur en de bouwtechnische, typologische en functionele zeldzaamheid.
Spoorwegwatertoren met draaischijf, waterput en vulinstallatie zijn van algemeen belang wegens de betekenis voor de geschiedenis van bedrijf en techniek met name voor die van het stoomtijdperk, een relatief kort hoofdstuk uit de geschiedenis van de techniek, in het bijzonder die van de spoorweghistorie.

Description
Railway water tower. The 9-metre-high water tower has an octagonal brick substructure and a considerably projecting concrete reservoir without cladding. Brickwork in Flemish bond. The concrete reservoir has a flat roof. A partition wall divides the reservoir into two compartments. On the outside a steel staircase by which one can reach the roof of the water reservoir. In the substructure a rectangular steel door and a rectangular window. In the interior of the substructure a stove was present which in winter had to prevent the water in the reservoir from freezing.
The remnant of the turntable for locomotives consists of a large ring built in brick with a height of approximately two metres and a diameter of approximately 15 metres, which partly projects above ground level. The water well is square in form with in the middle the metal filling installation consisting of a column of approximately four metres in height with attached at the top a metal pipe arm.
