Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
On the western bank of the Meuse stands, two-thirds buried behind a concrete REVETMENT WALL in the garden of the ferry house, a CASEMATE of type G (135) hz. It is, as far as known, one of the last four cast-steel casemates remaining in our country. Both the casemate and the revetment wall date from 1939. The casemate protected with (2) the ferry site against enemy crossing from the eastern bank.
Description
The casemate is concealed seventy per cent behind the concrete revetment wall of the southern garden of the ferry house. From the road, the upper part of the reinforced-concrete casing of the cupola, set on a concrete working floor, can be seen.
From the concrete project several bolts, part of the steel reinforcement, which serve as camouflage hooks. On the southwestern side, moreover, one of the original air ventilation tubes is visible. Also a small part of the cupola, which has a diameter of two metres, projects from the wall. It is important that the cupola is still provided with the original finish of a layer of approximately five cm. asbestos concrete. On the southeastern side the cupola is provided with a gun port. To enlarge the field of fire the concrete revetment wall is provided at that location with a scarp. The greater part of the casemate is hidden under a layer of earth.
The cupola stands at an angle of 135 degrees to the entrance. This man-hole, provided with the original steel door, is situated on the western side in the cupola. On the northwestern side of the casemate a low brick portal. This belongs to the original field fortification and falls within the protection. The portal was originally provided with a concrete roof slab; this was removed over time and the portal has been filled with earth.
Valuation
The casemate is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the construction of a defence line shortly before the Second World War, making use of existing elements in the landscape; it is of importance because of the special use of materials, namely asbestos concrete and cast steel and is of significance for the typological development of casemates. It has ensemble value as part of the defence line on the eastern bank of the Meuse. It has been preserved intact and as one of the last examples of a cast-steel casemate is extremely rare.
