Inleiding
Aan de westelijke zijde van 't Zand staat, temidden van een waardevolle bomengroep, een bakstenen R.K. PROCESSIEKAPEL in traditionalistische stijl uit omstreeks 1930. Omstreeks 1950 is een openluchtaltaar toegevoegd.
Omschrijving
De bedeplaats bestaat uit een van handvorm baksteen gemetselde opstand van circa vier meter hoogte, afgedekt door een klein zadeldak met verbeterde Hollandse pannen. Aan de oostelijke zijde is deze kapel voorzien van drie bakstenen treden, die leiden naar het tegen de opstand onder het overstek van het zadeldak opgetrokken bakstenen altaar. Dit is met een kunststenen mensa afgedekt. In het muurwerk hierboven een lege, blinde rondboognis met hardstenen dorpel. De achterzijde van de muur is voorzien van gesmede rechte steekankers.
De kapel bevindt zich op een grasveldje met een veertiental lindenbomen, waarvan vijf oudere exemplaren, die met een stamomtrek van ca. 2,5 - 3 meter uit omstreeks 1850 zullen dateren.
Waardering
De processiekapel is van algemeen belang. Het gebouwtje heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociale en geestelijke ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de ontwikkeling van de katholieke devoties en de processies op de openbare weg, die in Boxmeer nimmer verboden zijn geweest en een uitdrukking vonden in de H. Bloedprocessie die een eeuwenlange traditie heeft. Het heeft ensemblewaarden als onderdeel van een groter geheel, het plein Het Zand, dat cultuurhistorisch en stedenbouwkundig van belang is. On the western side of 't Zand stands, amidst a valuable group of trees, a brick R.C. PROCESSION CHAPEL in traditionalist style from around 1930. Around 1950 an open-air altar was added.
Description
The place of pilgrimage consists of a masonry wall of handmade brick of approximately four metres height, topped by a small saddle roof with improved Dutch tiles. On the eastern side this chapel is provided with three brick steps, which lead to the brick altar constructed against the wall below the eaves of the saddle roof. This is covered with a stone mensa. In the masonry above a blank, blind round-arch niche with stone sill. The rear side of the wall is provided with wrought straight tie anchors.
The chapel is located on a grass area with some fourteen linden trees, five of which are older specimens, which with a trunk circumference of approximately 2.5 - 3 metres will date from around 1850.
Valuation
The procession chapel is of general importance. The small building has cultural-historical value as a special expression of social and spiritual development, in particular the development of Catholic devotions and processions in the public space, which in Boxmeer were never prohibited and found expression in the H. Blood procession which has an age-old tradition. It has ensemble values as part of a larger whole, the square Het Zand, which is of cultural-historical and urban-planning importance. It has been preserved in good condition and as an example of a permanent processional altar is also rare in Noord-Brabant.
