Inleiding

Introduction

A double VILLA erected in 1882-1883, completely detached between the Weteringschans and the Singelgracht, located in a series of detached buildings. Built to a design by architect N. Vos in a characteristic late 19th-century classicist-eclectic style. The patron was C.C. van de Wijk.

Description

Double brick villa designed on a rectangular ground plan consisting of a basement, three storeys and an attic storey, covered by a combination of steep hipped roofs with shingles and a flat roof with profiled moulding. Per hipped roof a pair of roof dormers with T-window in rich moulding with claw-pieces on basement and with corniced cornice with hoisting beam and with interrupted segmental pediment. The facades are strongly vertically articulated and are largely plastered and whitewashed. The projecting heavy facade moulding rests on consoles placed pairwise above wall tabs. Facade cladding of plinth and ground floor is rusticated and shows deep grooves. On the rear facade a grey plinth. The front facade (NE) shows six window axes with in the centre the two entrances with profiled doors and perpendicular stone stoeps and on either side two windows. Above the cordon moulding per house three windows with sash windows closed by an ornamental frieze with moulding on consoles. In the centre there is a segmental pediment. Further garlands, cassettes, spandrels, stepped corner mouldings and wall tabs with natural stone imitation. Also on the second floor per house three T-windows. The rear facade (SW) has on the division of the houses a slightly projecting and whitewashed facade section with natural stone imitation and above simple windows two arranged window sections with pilasters, half-column, and coupled round-arch windows and closed with a moulding above which ornament. Above the windows of the ground floor are the T-windows of the first floor. These show an enframing with consoles, frieze and moulding. On this storey per window a small balcony with ornamental grille. On the second floor per house a simple window in frame. Further stepped corner mouldings. The left side facade (SE) has on the right side a bay over basement and main floor with window with curved sash on the front. Above the bay an overhanging balcony with balustrade and with Corinthian columns, above which a second balcony with balustrade. On the left side a conservatory with slender posts and lean-to roof. The right side facade (NW) likewise has on the right side a conservatory with lean-to roof. On the left side a bay over basement and main floor with among others windows with partly round sash. Closed with a balcony with simple balustrade. In both side facades windows with articulation.
