Inleiding
Op de hoek van Dam, Kalverstraat en Paleisstraat in 1912-1914 tot stand gekomen SOCIETEITSGEBOUW met woning en drie afzonderlijke winkels gelijkstraats, naar een ontwerp in 'Um 1800'-stijl van Schill & Haverkamp in opdracht van de Vereeniging 'De Groote Club' bij monde van mr. Aug. Philips jr. N.B. In 1931 vond er een uitbreiding plaats door verbouwing van de percelen van 'Doctrina et Amicitia' en afbraak van het tussenliggende pand in de Kalverstraat. In 1980 verscheen op de benedenverdieping een vestiging van de Rabobank. Ook zetelen hier op de verdiepingen een aantal krantenredacties van NRC en Algemeen Handelsblad.
Omschrijving
Op een nagenoeg rechthoekige plattegrond gerealiseerd societeitsgebouw bestaande uit een begane grond, tweeverdiepingen en schilddaken bedekt met leien. Boven de afgeschuinde hoek een tentvormig rond en afgeknot dak. Een rechte overstekende gootlijst aan de onderzijde voorzien van gootklossen.
Licht risalerende gevel wordt op de verdiepingen verticaal geleed door tussen het donkere baksteen geplaatste natuurstenen banden. Gebosseerd in natuursteen uitgevoerde begane grond op hardstenen basement met grote rondboogvormige openingen welke zijn voorzien van sluitstenen. De bogen rusten op zware posten. Over een groot deel van de eerste verdieping lopend balkon met ijzeren sierbalustrade tussen hardstenen posten. De balkons rusten op zware decoratieve consoles. Resterende vensteropeningen voorzien van Frans balkon en ijzeren sierbalustrade. Rechthoekige vensteropeningen waarvan sommige met natuurstenen omlijsting. Vierkante vensteropeningen op tweede verdieping voorzien van kruiskozijnen. Sommige voorzien van natuurstenen omlijsting.
Boven de goothoogte een attiek van dakvensters van verschillend formaat, alle voorzien van een getoogd fronton. Interieur ingang Paleisstraat in voornamelijk Neo-Grec. Tochtportaal met tongewelf waarin cassettenplafond in stuc met decoratieve voorstellingen in de cassetten. Hal met trappehuis. Gipsen beelden op sierconsoles. Lichtkap met glas-in-lood raam in Jugendstil. Vier bronzen lamphouders aan plafond.

Description
A society building realised on a nearly rectangular floor plan consisting of a ground floor, two storeys and hipped roofs covered with slate. Above the chamfered corner a tent-shaped rounded and truncated roof. A straight overhanging drip moulding at the underside fitted with gutter brackets.
Slightly projecting facade articulated vertically on the storeys by natural stone bands set between dark brickwork. Ground floor executed in rustication in natural stone on a hardstone basement with large round-arched openings fitted with voussoirs. The arches rest on heavy piers. A balcony with iron ornamental balustrade between hardstone piers running over a large part of the first storey. The balconies rest on heavy decorative consoles. Remaining window openings provided with French balconies and iron ornamental balustrades. Rectangular window openings, some with natural stone surrounds. Square window openings on second storey fitted with cross windows. Some provided with natural stone surrounds.
Above the cornice height an attic with roof windows of varying size, all provided with an arched pediment. Interior entrance on Paleisstraat predominantly in Neo-Grec style. Draught vestibule with barrel vault containing a coffered plaster ceiling with decorative representations in the coffers. Hall with stairwell. Plaster sculptures on ornamental consoles. Light well with glass-in-lead window in Jugendstil. Four bronze lamp holders on ceiling.
Valuation
Former society building with partly still original interior of general importance due to its cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a social-cultural development as an exponent of the flourishing associational life at that time, as well as of architectural-historical value due to the aesthetic quality of the facade design. Also important due to its situational value as entrance to the Kalverstraat.
