Omschrijving
De inpandig gesitueerde Wintertuin is 13.83 meter hoog, heeft een oppervlakte van 487 vierkante meter en wordt gedekt door een glazen kap gedragen door smeedijzeren vakwerkspanten die zijn opgebouwd uit gewalste profielen met gietijzeren ornamenten. De spanten hebben een x-vormig wandstavenpatroon, aangevuld met 'verticale' staven. De bovenrand van de spanten heeft een driehoekige doorsnede; de onderrand is opgebogen. De galerij is door middel van rijk gedecoreerde gietijzeren kolommen aan zich op de muur bevindende consoles bevestigd. Op deze consoles rust tevens de onderrand van het spant. In het midden van elke spant bevinden zich ornamenten met ringen waarop de wapens van de toenmalige provincies zijn aangebracht. De kopse kanten van de Wintertuin zijn voorzien van tympanen met schilderingen van de hand van vader en zoon Tetar van Elven. Op een van deze schilderingen wordt het Amsterdamse stadswapen geflankeerd door de Nederlandse maagd als beschermvrouwe van de Kunsten en de Stedemaagd als schutse van Handel en Nijverheid.
Waardering
De Wintertuin is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuurhistorische waarde. Eveneens van architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de bijzondere vormgeving van het interieur. De Wintertuin is bovenal van belang wegens de bouwtechnische zeldzaamheid: het is een van de oudste en meest zeldzame bouwwerken met een smeedijzeren dakconstructie in Nederland. Tot slot van belang als onderdeel van het Krasnapolsky-complex.

The internally situated Winter Garden is 13.83 metres high, has an area of 487 square metres and is covered by a glass roof supported by wrought iron truss frames constructed from rolled profiles with cast iron ornaments. The frames have an x-shaped pattern of wall bars, supplemented with vertical bars. The top edge of the frames has a triangular cross-section; the bottom edge is curved upward. The gallery is attached by means of richly decorated cast iron columns to consoles located on the wall. On these consoles also rests the bottom edge of the frame. In the middle of each frame are ornaments with rings on which the coats of arms of the provinces of the time are placed. The gable ends of the Winter Garden are furnished with tympana with paintings by father and son Tetar van Elven. On one of these paintings the Amsterdam city coat of arms is flanked by the Dutch maiden as patroness of the Arts and the City maiden as guardian of Commerce and Industry.
