Inleiding

Introduction

St. Bonifatius Church, part of the church complex with presbytery, built in 1889/1897 after a design by Nicolaas Molenaar in Neo-Gothic style. The church is oriented roughly on a north-south axis.

Description

Three-aisle basilical cruciform church built in grey brick (Flemish bond, struck joint) under gabled roofs covered with slate, on which are roof dormers.

The church has a square-plan tower against the northern facade, approximately 75 metres high, with a spire. The tower is flanked by two five-sided chapels under hipped roofs with, on the left side, a round stair turret under a conical roof and on the right side a square stair turret under a catslide roof. The five-bay-long nave ends in a transept with a five-sided closed apse. The transept arms are barely pronounced in plan, but clearly distinguish themselves as architectural volume with their ridge height aligned with that of the church nave. The crossing is crowned by an open-work tower with zinc superstructure and bell under a copper-covered spire. The church has pointed-arch-shaped windows and spandrels with ashlar and brick tracery and rose windows with an ashlar surround. The building is further decorated with ashlar elements such as the coping of the offsets and parts of the archivolts. Under the roof edge is a dwarf arch frieze.

The tower has four storeys. The lowest part is the entrance storey with archivolts. In it is placed a right-angled double wooden door with fittings under an ashlar capital above which a four-part pointed-arch-shaped fanlight is placed. Above the entrance storey a large pointed-arch-shaped window and an image of Saint Bonifatius. Above that three coupled pointed-arch windows and in the uppermost part three louvres. In the side facade of the tower are placed pointed-arch-shaped spandrels and at the top louvres. The fourth storey is finished with a clock face on three sides. The copper-covered spire is slightly pinched and has a weather vane. The chapels on either side of the tower have pointed-arch-shaped windows between buttresses and on either side adjoining single-storey building components in which the entrance is placed under a pointed-arch-shaped fanlight.

The nave has side aisles in which pointed-arch-shaped windows between buttresses are placed. Above, at the location of the central aisle, round windows are placed in the clerestory between small air arches.

The transept has in the gable ends large pointed-arch-shaped windows with stepped rising pointed-arch-shaped windows above. In the clerestory of the side facade round windows are placed.

In the apse pointed-arch windows are placed between buttresses. On the east side of the apse the sacristy provided with pointed-arch windows has been built, which connects to the presbytery.

Between the church and the presbytery a sacristy built as an intermediary element.

Interior The nave is vaulted with cross-rib vaults, which are supported by alternating columns and clustered pillars. Above the transverse arches is a triforium zone. The original floor and bench plan have been preserved.

High altar of various types of marble with superstructure from 1907 made by W. Mengelberg in oak with sculpture and polychromed figures.

Stations of the Cross by Th. Molkeboer from 1908/1916, executed as tile tableaux with images in which scenes from the New and Old Testament are combined. Sacristy with beam ceiling, built-in cupboards, safe with trefoil motif, doors with letter panels, copper lavabo.

Valuation

The St. Bonifatius Church is of general interest because of its cultural-historical value as an example of a church building built after the Restoration of the Episcopate (1848).

Of architectural-historical value because of the Neo-Gothic building style characteristic of Catholic church construction from the end of the 19th century and as an example preserved intact in main form, material use and detailing of a church building from the oeuvre of Nicolaas Molenaar.

Of ensemble value because of the functional connection with the presbytery and the unity in building style of these two components.

The church has urban planning value because of its striking location in the centre of Rijswijk and the great visual-determining value of the church tower.
