Inleiding

Introduction

VILLA 'Mariënhove' was designed in 1869 in eclectic style on behalf of Jacobus van Mariënhof. Originally the villa was called 'Onze Verwachting'. The architect is presumably S.A. van Lunteren. Similarities with the property Muntstraat 36-38 can be found in the building style and ornamentation. The wooden conservatory originally placed against the left side gable was relocated to the rear gable and partly rebuilt. The park in which the house stood has been reduced. On the grounds there is a coach house built in 1891. In the rear gable, against the left part of the gable, there is a wooden conservatory under a flat roof, which is considered of minor importance. The villa is situated on the singel, just outside the walls of Wijk bij Duurstede.

Description

The villa is constructed on an approximately rectangular floor plan and comprises two storeys under a flattened hipped roof covered with Dutch tiles in the traditional manner.

The centre of the front facade is raised under a gently sloping gabled roof and is projecting. In the rear gable the situation is reversed. The facades are symmetrical in layout and above a grey plinth are whitewashed and at the corners provided with pilasters with consoles, which support the moulded cornices. The gable fields are provided with imitation ashlar motifs; between the storeys there is a cordon moulding. The sash windows are arched and, with the exception of those in the rear gable, surrounded by moulded frames with cornices.

The front facade contains in the centre in the risalit in the first storey two coupled windows under a moulded frame with consoles. In the second storey there is a Palladian window with above it a round window. The pilasters of the recessed field develop into ornamentation. The gutter rests on consoles. On either side of the risalit the gable contains a window in each storey.

The right side gable contains in a central risalit with pilasters a portico with an entrance door with fanlight. In the first storey to the right of the risalit a window is placed and to the left French doors with a fanlight. The second storey contains three windows. The left side gable contains in the first storey in the centre a blind recess and on either side two pairs of French doors with arched fanlight. The second storey contains three windows. On the left in the gable the first stone is set in with the text: 'The first stone laid by Anne van Mariënhoff-van der Veur, 15 - 9 - 1869.' The rear gable is raised in the centre and recessed and executed with asymmetrically placed six-light sash windows in both storeys. At the top there are two coupled four-light windows.

The rooms in the house are grouped around a central hall in which the staircase is situated, which is provided with a skylight. The floor on the ground floor is laid with marble; the stair rail is of zinc. The rooms on the ground floor are provided with stucco ceilings and fireplaces. The windows have wooden shutters. The rooms on the south-west side are separated by sliding doors. In one room a fireplace is placed under the window. The window can be closed by a sliding mirror.

Valuation

The villa is of general importance on account of its architectural-historical value as a richly detailed and well-preserved example of a dwelling house in eclectic style, presumably by S.A. van Lunteren. Of cultural-historical importance, in addition to the villa, is also the set of bollards of which, as vulnerable heritage items, ever more are disappearing. The property is furthermore of situational value on account of its location on the singel, just outside the city walls of Wijk bij Duurstede.
