Omschrijving

Description
HUIS DE WILTKAMP. Whitewashed HOMESTEAD built around 1800 in Empire style, consisting of a front house located on the east side and a rear house facing west. The front house may have been built earlier than the rear house; both are registered on the Cadastral Minute Plan from 1827. The front house is constructed in two storeys and is crowned by a gabled roof covered with grey tiles. On the front, the facade above the cornice is closed off by a pediment with the name of the homestead in the tympanum field. Layout of front facade of front house: a facade divided into two bays with two terrace doors with Empire 6-pane glazing and with a semicircular fanlight with three windows separated by two curved glazing bars. In the side facades of the front house a single terrace door identical to these. On the upper storey two balcony doors positioned on the bays with Empire 6-pane glazing. In the side facades on the upper storey a single Empire 6-pane window. On the front of the front house a veranda with wide overhang has been placed, which is supported by three slender cast-iron posts. The veranda is fitted with a wrought-iron Empire balustrade, composed of a repeating motif of interlaced pointed ovals and diamonds with arch-shaped inswept planes. The rear house is hidden from view at the height of the front house by two wing walls on either side of the rear sides of the front house. The wing walls curve outward at the top in a volute shape. At the endpoint of this inswept curve a stone ornamental vase is positioned. Halfway along the wing walls is a slightly projecting field with a centrally located niche, in which a marble statue on a plinth is placed. Both statues, which belong together and may have been part of a larger set, date from the 18th century. It has been suggested that the left statue represents Flora and the right statue represents Fauna. The statues stand on a triangular plinth with arch-shaped inswept planes, which tapers upward. Centrally on the forward-facing plane a medallion with an emperor bust in relief. From the Cadastral Minute Plan from 1827 it appears that at the height of the house De Wiltkamp a piece of the earthworks of Wijk bij Duurstede had been excavated and that a pond landscape had been laid out here at the edge of the ramparts. In this way, from house De Wiltkamp already before 1827 a view had been created of the ramparts with the ruin of the former castle of Wijk bij Duurstede in the distance. After the re-development of the earthworks into the present landscape-style park by landscape architect Jan David Zocher jr. (1791-1870) from 1852, the house has gained significance as an important vedute of this development. Particularly at the height of the bridge to the west of the ruin, house De Wiltkamp, whose front house from the park can evoke associations with a classical temple, has great ornamental value as a "point de vue".
