Inleiding
WAAKHUIS met DIJKMAGAZIJN (no. 5 'De Doornboom'). In 1878 werd in opdracht van het Hoogheemraadschap Lekdijk Bovendams een standaardontwerp gemaakt voor een waakhuis met dijkmagazijn. Het `Waakhuis no. 5' genaamd `De Doornboom' werd kort na 1878 opgetrokken in traditionele bouwstijl. Een soortgelijk waakhuis bevindt zich aan de dijk in de gemeente Amerongen. Door de dijkverzwaring is de dijk een aantal meters richting rivier komen te liggen en loopt de weg op enige meters afstand van het pand. Tot de inventaris behoort onder meer het dijkbewakingsgereedschap en de oorspronkelijke tafels van het waakhuis.
Omschrijving
Het aan de Lekdijk, tegen de dijk aangebouwde waakhuis met dijkmagazijn, is opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond en telt één bouwlaag aan de dijkzijde en twee bouwlagen aan de polderzijde. Het pand wordt gedekt door een evenwijdig aan de weg gesitueerd zadeldak met gesmoorde tuile-du-Nord. Op de nok staan twee stenen schoorstenen. Het woongedeelte heeft getoogde houten zesruits schuifvensters, het waakhuis getoogde gietijzeren vensters. Alle vensters zijn voorzien van persiennes. De gevels zijn voorzien van muurankers en boven de vensters uitgevoerd met getoogde strekken.
De voorgevel aan de dijk bevat links een getoogde dubbele houten deur met ter weerszijden vensteropeningen met persiennes. Rechts hiervan is tegen de gevel een publikatiebord bevestigd. De rechterzijde van de gevel bevat een deur met bovenlicht en een zesruits venster.
De achtergevel bevat links een deur waartegen een moderne houten aanbouw onder lessenaardak is gezet. Rechts hiervan bevindt zich een stenen uitbouw onder lessenaar roevendak. Ernaast is een venster gezet. Rechts bevat de gevel een deur met bovenlicht en een venster. In de tweede bouwlaag bevindt zich een groot schuifraam en een klein venster, type stalraam.
De rechterzijgevel bevat twee maal twee vensters en in de top een rondvenster.
De linkerzijgevel heeft in de eerste bouwlaag twee vensters en in de topgevel een luik.
De indeling van het pand is oorspronkelijk, even als het interieur van het waakhuis. Beneden bevindt zich het waakhuis met kamer voor de dijkbaas, de wachtmeesters en een slaapvertrek. Het waakhuis is uitgevoerd met een stenen vloer met geschilderde voegen en ingericht met houten banken en tafel. In het slaapvertrek zijn houten britsen gebouwd. De kamer voor de dijkbaas en de waakmeesters is voorzien van een houten schouw met ornamenten. Naast het waakgedeelte zijn twee ruimtes: een portaal met een trap en een voormalige keuken. De tweede bouwlaag ter hoogte van de dijk bevat het dijkmagazijn, de voormalige kamer van de hoogheemraad en enkele andere vertrekken. De zolder is uitgevoerd met Philibert-spanten. Rechts van het pand is in de dijk, tegen het dijkhuis een stenen trap aangebracht.
Waardering
Het pand is van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur- en cultuurhistorische waarde als gaaf en herkenbaar voorbeeld van een dijkmagazijn en waakhuis. Tevens is het object van situationelewaarde vanwege de ligging aan de Lekdijk.

WATCHHOUSE with DIKE MAGAZINE (no. 5 'De Doornboom'). In 1878, by order of the Lekdijk Bovendams Water Board, a standard design was created for a watchhouse with dike magazine. Description
The watchhouse with dike magazine, built against the Lekdijk dike, is constructed on a rectangular floor plan and has one storey on the dike side and two storeys on the polder side. The building is covered by a gabled roof situated parallel to the road with suppressed Tuile-du-Nord tiles. Two brick chimneys stand on the ridge. The residential section has arched wooden six-pane sash windows, the watchhouse has arched cast-iron windows. All windows are fitted with shutters. The facades are provided with ornamental wall anchors and above the windows executed with arched brickwork.
The front facade on the dike contains on the left an arched double wooden door with window openings with shutters on either side. To the right of this a notice board is attached to the facade. The right side of the facade contains a door with fanlight and a six-pane window.
The rear facade contains on the left a door against which a modern wooden extension under a lean-to roof has been placed. To the right of this is a brick extension under a lean-to roof with glazing bars. Next to it is a window. On the right the facade contains a door with fanlight and a window. In the second storey there is a large sash window and a small window, stable window type.
The right side facade contains two rows of two windows and in the gable a circular window.

The layout of the building is original, as is the interior of the watchhouse. Below is the watchhouse with a room for the dike master, the watch keepers and a sleeping quarters. The watchhouse is executed with a stone floor with painted joints and furnished with wooden benches and table. In the sleeping quarters wooden bunks are built in. The room for the dike master and the watch keepers is provided with a wooden fireplace with ornaments. Next to the watch section are two rooms: a hall with stairs and a former kitchen. The second storey at the height of the dike contains the dike magazine, the former room of the water board chief and several other rooms. The attic is executed with Philibert roof trusses. To the right of the building, in the dike, against the dike house a stone staircase has been constructed.
Valuation
The building is of general importance because of its architectural and cultural-historical value as a sound and recognisable example of a dike magazine and watchhouse. The object is furthermore of situational value because of its location on the Lekdijk.
