Omschrijving
De SCHOOL bestaat uit een éénlaags pand met grote verdiepingshoogte op een langgerekte plattegrond onder plat dak met dakschilden. De voorgevel is symmetrisch van opzet en voorzien van een middenrisaliet en hoekrisalieten. De hoekrisalieten hebben een trapgevel, de middenrisaliet is voorzien van een opbouw met steil tentdak met smeedijzeren bekroning.
Dakschilden en tentdak zijn gedekt met leien in maasdekking.
Het pand is uitgevoerd in rood-oranje baksteen, voorzien van een plint in donkere baksteen en gele speklagen. Boven de ramen, gevat in een geprofileerde bakstenen omlijsting, bevinden zich korfbogen. Deze zijn van rode baksteen gemaakt met aanzet- en sluitstenen uitgevoerd in natuursteen, sluitstenen zijn van een diamantkop voorzien. Direkt onder de geprofileerde goot is een tandlijst in gele en zwarte baksteen zichtbaar.
In de hoekrisalieten bevinden zich smalle opgeklampte deuren met bovenlicht, een vierruitsraam met glas-in-lood. In de korfbogen erboven bevinden zich gepleisterde boogvelden met geschilderde voorstelling, links is dat het wapen van landcommandeur van Ruyschenbergh (stichter van de latijnse school) met het jaartal 1587 en een banderol met opschrift SOLI DEO GLORIA. Rechts is het wapen van paus Leo XIII zichtbaar met in een banderol het opschrift LUMEN IN CAELO. De trapgevels daarboven zijn voorzien van zesruitsraam, gevuld met glas-in-lood in geometrische vormen.
De gevels worden bekroond door siervazen.
De middenrisaliet bevat op de begane grond een gedenksteen met opschrift L.J. KLAASSEN/BIJ ZIJN/30-JARIG RECTORSCHAP/GEMERTS INGEZETENEN IN/DIEPGEVOELDE DANKBARE/HERINNERING 1880-1910. Erboven is een rondbogige blindnis aangebracht met gepleisterd veld waarin het opschrift DOM en in gotische letters PIETAS PROFIS/LIBERALITATE... In een rechthoekig veld daarboven GYMNASIUM.
In een rondboognis in de opbouw van de risaliet is het beeld van de Heilige Catharina geplaatst. In de top een rond raam, gevuld met glas-in-lood. Tegen de zijkanten van de toren zijn blindnissen, gevuld met polychroom metselmozaiek zichtbaar.
De gevels zijn voorzien van hoge brede ramen met roedeverdeling. De korfbogen zijn uitgevoerd als op de risalieten, in de boogvelden is polychroom metselmozaiek aangebracht.
In het dakvlak zijn dakkapelletjes aanwezig, elk met een zadeldak en windveer met smeedijzeren bekroning. In het hout van de topgevel is een gesneden driepas zichtbaar. Spitsboograam waarvan het bovenlicht met glas-in-lood is gevuld.
In de gevel zijn smeedijzeren ankers zichtbaar.
Tegen de linkerzijgevel is een éénlaags blokvormige aanbouw onder schilddak aanwezig. Aan de voorzijde daarvan een opgeklampte deur.
In het interieur is de oorspronkelijke indeling in grote lijnen bewaard gebleven. Op zolder een tongewelf met gordelbogen op consoles, geheel wit gestuct. Van de inrichting zijn onder andere het trappenhuis met trap en de paneeldeuren met omlijsting nog in oorspronkelijke staat.
Waardering
Het geheel is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde vanwege de oorspronkelijke functie en kenmerkt de geestelijke ontwikkeling in Gemert als onderwijscentrum van de Peel. Het heeft belang vanwege de herinnering aan het eens bloeiende onderwijssysteem van de Latijnse scholen. Het heeft architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een schoolgebouw in een mengeling van stijlvormen. Het is gaaf bewaard gebleven en als voorbeeld van een vroegere Latijnse school uiterst zeldzaam.

Description
The SCHOOL consists of a single-storey building with large floor height on an elongated ground plan under flat roof with roof slopes. The front facade is symmetrical in composition and provided with a central risalit and corner risalits. The corner risalits have stepped gables, the central risalit is provided with a structure with steep tent roof with wrought-iron cresting.
Roof slopes and tent roof are covered with slates in bond-and-a-half bond.
The building is executed in red-orange brick, provided with a plinth in dark brick and yellow brick courses. Above the windows, set in a profiled brick frame, are basket-handle arches. These are made of red brick with voussoirs and springings executed in natural stone, springings are provided with a diamond point. Directly below the profiled cornice is a dentil course in yellow and black brick visible.
In the corner risalits are narrow clamped doors with fanlights, a four-light window with leaded glass. In the basket-handle arches above are plastered arch fields with painted representation, on the left is the coat of arms of landcommandeur van Ruyschenbergh (founder of the Latin school) with the year 1587 and a banderole with inscription SOLI DEO GLORIA. On the right is the coat of arms of Pope Leo XIII visible with in a banderole the inscription LUMEN IN CAELO. The stepped gables above are provided with six-light windows, filled with leaded glass in geometric forms.
The facades are crowned by ornamental urns.
The central risalit contains on the ground floor a commemorative stone with inscription L.J. KLAASSEN/AT HIS/30-YEAR RECTORSHIP/GEMERTS RESIDENTS IN/DEEPLY FELT GRATEFUL/REMEMBRANCE 1880-1910. Above it a semicircular blind opening is installed with plastered field in which the inscription DOM and in Gothic letters PIETAS PROFIS/LIBERALITATE... In a rectangular field above GYMNASIUM.
In a semicircular niche in the structure of the risalit is the statue of Saint Catharina placed. At the top a round window, filled with leaded glass. Against the sides of the tower are blind niches, filled with polychrome mosaic brickwork visible.
The facades are provided with large wide windows with glazing bars. The basket-handle arches are executed as on the risalits, in the arch fields polychrome mosaic brickwork is installed.
In the roof plane are small roof dormers present, each with a gabled roof and wind brace with wrought-iron cresting. In the wood of the stepped gable is a carved trefoil visible. Pointed arch window of which the upper light is filled with leaded glass.
In the facade wrought-iron wall anchors are visible.
Against the left-hand side facade is a single-storey block-shaped extension under hipped roof present. On its front side a clamped door.
In the interior the original layout has been largely preserved. On the attic a barrel vault with transverse arches on consoles, entirely white stuccoed. Of the furnishings among other things the stairwell with stairs and the panelled doors with frame are still in original state.
Valuation
The whole is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value because of the original function and characterises the intellectual development in Gemert as an educational centre of the Peel. It has importance because of the memory of the once flourishing educational system of the Latin schools. It has architectural-historical value as an example of a school building in a mixture of style forms. It is preserved intact and as an example of a former Latin school extremely rare.
