Inleiding

Introduction

Former lodge building "Anna Paulowna" from 1858 is situated with its gabled left side facade on the north side of the Dam and with its long front facade on the west side of the stepped rising lock complex. The freemason lodge was built to the design of L.J. Immink in the style of Neo-Classicism.

Description

Former lodge building built on a rectangular plan, consisting of a basement, two storeys and a roof storey under a hipped roof with shallow roof pitch. The roof has Philibert roof trusses and the roof slopes are covered with black Dutch tiles. The ridge is broken through by three square flue pipes with wind caps.

The building has four cornice-topped facades laid in red brick and articulated by block pilasters on the facade corners, a plinth, architrave and connecting bands between the arched surrounds of the facade openings on the first and second storey. The long east facade is more richly executed with additional pilasters and a string course. These elements are executed in natural stone. The basement, situated on the north side and part of the east side, has masonry in hard stone in which square window openings are left. The wooden continuous cornice that caps the facades is supported by wooden consoles that articulate the frieze vertically. The facades contain arched and round-arched windows, all provided with rear-panes sashes with wide mullion.

The long asymmetrical east facade is eight window bays wide. Pilasters divide this facade into four bays of unequal size. The ground floor has an arched window per bay, the upper floor a round-arched window per bay.

The southern gable facade is plastered and has three window bays, on the ground floor provided with arched windows and on the upper floor with round-arched windows. The window bay far left has a panelled door. The window arrangement is the same as the long east facade.

The northern gable facade has three window bays, on the ground floor with arched windows and on the upper floor with round-arched windows. The northern roof slope has a flush-topped dormer with two four-pane windows.

The long blind west facade is obscured from view by development.

Valuation

The former lodge building "Anna Paulowna" is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value as a well-designed and well-preserved example of a freemason lodge from the third quarter of the 19th century, erected in a distinguished Neo-Classicist style. The building has situational value because of its prominent urban planning location beside the lock complex in Zaandam.
