Inleiding
STANDBEELD van tsaar Peter de Grote daterend uit 1909. Het midden op de Dam geplaatste beeld werd ontworpen door de Russische beeldhouwer Léopold Bernstamm in opdracht van tsaar Nicolaas II, die het in 1911 schonk aan de stad Zaandam ter herinnering aan het verblijf van Peter de Grote in de stad. Nicolaas II liet de in Parijs werkzame Bernstamm tussen 1900 en 1910 vijf monumenten voor zijn beroemde voorvader maken waaronder een standbeeld in Sint Petersburg. Het Zaanse beeld, dat gegoten werd bij J. Malesset in Parijs, is hiervan een replica. De sokkel werd ontworpen door de Parijse architect A. Guilbert.
Omschrijving
Circa vijf meter hoog standbeeld bestaande uit een twee meter hoog bronzen beeld geplaatst op een circa drie meter hoge sokkel van het grijze Emelpov-graniet uit de Oekraïne. Op de westzijde van de achthoekige sokkel staat in bronzen letters de tekst: "CZAAR PETER I/LEERT DEN SCHEEPSBOUW IN ZAANDAM/1697/GESCHENK VAN KEIZER/NICOLAAS II/AAN DE STAD ZAANDAM/1911". De oostkant van de sokkel is voorzien van een bronzen reliëf van het Russische rijkswapen, waaronder zich hetzelfde opschrift in het Russisch bevindt.
Het beeld toont tsaar Peter de Grote als scheepstimmerman, zittend op de rand van een in aanbouw zijnd schip, terwijl hij met een bijl een stuk hout bewerkt. Het beeld is aan de achterzijde gesigneerd "L. BERNSTAMM" (links) en "J. MALESSET/fondeur d'art/PARIS" (rechts).
Waardering

STATUE of Tsar Peter the Great dating from 1909. The statue, placed in the middle of the Dam, was designed by Russian sculptor Léopold Bernstamm on the orders of Tsar Nicholas II, who presented it in 1911 to the city of Zaandam in commemoration of Tsar Peter the Great's stay in the city. Nicholas II commissioned Bernstamm, who worked in Paris, to make five monuments for his famous predecessor between 1900 and 1910, including a statue in Saint Petersburg. The Zaandam statue, which was cast at J. Malesset in Paris, is a replica of this. The pedestal was designed by the Paris architect A. Guilbert.
Description
Approximately five metres high statue consisting of a two-metre-high bronze statue placed on an approximately three-metre-high pedestal of grey Emelpov granite from Ukraine. On the west side of the octagonal pedestal, in bronze letters, reads the text: "CZAAR PETER I/LEERT DEN SCHEEPSBOUW IN ZAANDAM/1697/GESCHENK VAN KEIZER/NICOLAAS II/AAN DE STAD ZAANDAM/1911". The east side of the pedestal is provided with a bronze relief of the Russian imperial coat of arms, beneath which the same inscription in Russian is located.
The statue shows Tsar Peter the Great as a shipwright, sitting on the edge of a ship under construction, while he works a piece of wood with an axe. The statue is signed on the reverse "L. BERNSTAMM" (left) and "J. MALESSET/fondeur d'art/PARIS" (right).
