Inleiding
Halfvrijstaande, direct aan de straat gesitueerde STADSVILLA, gebouwd in 1892 in de stijl van de neo-Hollandse renaissance met details uit de neo-gotiek in opdracht van Dirk Laan, lid van de Eerste Kamer. Het huis verving een ouder huis waarvan een gevelsteen in de achtergevel van het huidige pand is opgenomen. Vanaf 1915 kwam het pand in het bezit van de firma Wessanen & Laan die het in gebruik nam als kantoorruimte. In 1948 werd het kantoor verbouwd en in 1955 vergroot en nogmaals heringericht.
Omschrijving
De stadsvilla heeft een nagenoeg rechthoekig grondplan en bestaat uit een voorhuis van twee bouwlagen onder steil, in oorsprong leigedekt schilddak en een smallere achterbouw onder snijdend zadeldak met wolfeind. Het zadeldak heeft rode en zwarte kruispannen. Het rijk gedecoreerde muurwerk is opgetrokken in rode baksteen, gemetseld in kruisverband.
De voorgevel (N) heeft een hardstenen plint en zandstenen borstweringen, cordonlijst, speklagen, hoekkettingen, boogfries en baklijst met balustrade. Het rechter deel van de voorgevel heeft een rechthoekige risalerende partij over de totale gevelhoogte. Deze risalerende partij heeft op beide bouwlagen een groot zesdelig venster in zandsteen. De beide vensters hebben beneden drie houten ongedeelde schuiframen en glas in lood in de bovenlichten. Boven het venster op de etage is een groot boogveld met daarin een bijenkorf omringd door decoratie. Links heeft de parterre een paneeldeur met vijfruits bovenlicht onder een een zandstenen fronton op consoles waarin een schelpmotief is opgenomen. De etage heeft boven de deur een schuifvenster met zandstenen kalf en verticale kozijnstijl in het bovenlicht. De voorgevel wordt beëindigd door de eerder genoemde balustrade.
De rechterzijgevel (W) heeft een gepleisterde eerste bouwlaag met een driedelig venster. De etage heeft vier vensters, waarvan één met een gebogen bovendorpel. De linkerzijgevel (O) wordt door het buurpand aan het oog onttrokken.
De achtergevel (Z) heeft een gepleisterde eerste bouwlaag met (modern) venster en een deur rechts. De etage heeft twee T-vensters. De top is uitgevoerd als Vlaamse gevel en eveneens voorzien van een T-venster.
Het interieur van het pand is nog merendeels in oorspronkelijke staat en bevat onder meer een vestibule, een gang met oorspronkelijke lambrisering en pleisterplafond, een trappenhuis met twee bordessen en oorspronkelijke lambrisering, een halfronde kachelnis met gewelfschelp, marmervloer, gepleisterd plafond met kooflijst op consoles, kroonlijst en gepleisterde cassettes in de wanden en een lichtkoepel in meerkleurig glas-in-lood.
Ook de kamers in het achterste gedeelte van het huis zijn voor het grootste deel nog in oorspronkelijke staat en voorzien van lambriseringen, schouwen en cassetteplafonds met beschilderde doekpanelen. Van de kamers-en-suite op de begane grond zijn alleen de suitedeuren verdwenen. Nog aanwezig zijn hier de schouw en de plafondbalken en cassetteplafonds met beschilderde doekbespanning.
Waardering
Stadsvilla van algemeen belang wegens cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde als goed ontworpen en gaaf bewaard gebleven voorbeeld van laat 19de-eeuwse villa-architectuur. Het pand heeft ensemblewaarde als onderdeel van de uit voorname laat 19de-eeuwse en vroeg 20ste-eeuwse woonhuizen bestaande gevelrij langs de Zaanweg en in relatie tot de tegenover gelegen industriewand uit dezelfde periode.

Introduction
Semi-detached townhouse situated directly on the street, built in 1892 in the style of neo-Dutch Renaissance with details from neo-Gothic, commissioned by Dirk Laan, member of the First Chamber. The house replaced an older house, of which a facade stone has been incorporated into the rear facade of the current building. From 1915 the building came into the possession of the firm Wessanen & Laan, which used it as office space. In 1948 the office was remodeled and in 1955 enlarged and redecorated.
Description
The townhouse has an approximately rectangular ground plan and consists of a front section of two storeys under a steep, originally slate-covered hipped roof and a narrower rear building under an intersecting gabled roof with half-hipped end. The gabled roof has red and black cross tiles. The richly decorated brickwork is constructed in red brick, laid in English bond.
The front facade (N) has a hardstone plinth and sandstone string courses, cornice, banding courses, corner chains, arch frieze and brick moulding with balustrade. The right portion of the front facade has a rectangular projecting section across the entire facade height. This projecting section has on both storeys a large six-part window in sandstone. Both windows have on the ground floor three wooden undivided sash windows and leaded glass in the fanlights. Above the window on the upper floor is a large arch field with a beehive motif surrounded by decoration. On the left the ground floor has a panelled door with five-pane fanlight under a sandstone pediment on corbels in which a shell motif is incorporated. The upper floor has above the door a sash window with sandstone lintel and vertical window jamb in the fanlight. The front facade is terminated by the aforementioned balustrade.
The right side facade (W) has a plastered ground floor with a three-part window. The upper floor has four windows, one of which has a curved lintel. The left side facade (E) is concealed by the neighbouring building.
The rear facade (S) has a plastered ground floor with a (modern) window and a door on the right. The upper floor has two T-windows. The top is executed as a Flemish gable and likewise provided with a T-window.
The interior of the building is still largely in its original state and contains amongst other things a vestibule, a hallway with original wainscoting and plaster ceiling, a stairwell with two landings and original wainscoting, a semi-circular fireplace niche with vaulted shell, marble floor, plastered ceiling with cove moulding on corbels, cornice and plastered coffers in the walls and a skylight in polychrome leaded glass.
Also the rooms in the rear part of the house are for the most part still in their original state and provided with wainscoting, chimneyspieces and coffered ceilings with painted canvas panels. Of the en-suite rooms on the ground floor only the suite doors have disappeared. Still present here are the chimney piece and the ceiling beams and coffered ceilings with painted canvas finish.
Valuation
Townhouse of general importance for its cultural and architectural historical value as a well-designed and well-preserved example of late 19th-century villa architecture. The building has group value as part of the row of distinguished late 19th-century and early 20th-century residential buildings along the Zaanweg and in relation to the opposite industrial wall from the same period.
