Inleiding

Introduction

The former CONVENT of the Sisters of the Society of Jesus, Mary and Joseph (J.M.J.) is a block-shaped, symmetrically arranged congregational convent on the western side of Park, with two wings projecting from the building line. It is built in Neo-Renaissance style with elements of Neo-Gothic. The convent, which was known by the name H. Elisabethgesticht, was built in 1887 with funds from the estate of Mgr. J. Cuijten, who died in 1884, the president of the Society of J.M.J. born in Nuenen. In 1937 the building was extended on the north-eastern side with a nursing home and maternity clinic that fall outside the protection. The adjoining chapel from circa 1955, currently in use as a council chamber, also falls outside the protection. The convent functioned as such until 1977, after which it was taken into use as a social-cultural centre. The building was renovated around 1997-1998.

Description

The building consists of a two-storey main building on a rectangular floor plan, provided with a flat roof with hipped ends, on which slate in Dutch bond lies. The silhouette is enlivened by a projecting central section with a stepped gable and four chimneys on the corners of the roof. Against both sides of the main building, with the ridge direction perpendicular to the street, a single-storey side wing projecting from the building line is placed. These single-storey wings have gabled roofs with improved Dutch tiles and are provided with a stepped gable on the street side.

The facade of the main building is built of brick, has a hard stone plinth, is finished with a bonded stretcher-bond arch string and consists of seven window bays. Except for the central middle projection with the entrance section, on the ground floor and upper floor in all bays hardstone sills are provided, six-paned casement windows are placed under a segmental arch. At the window arches the brickwork is decorated with sandstone blocks and (in the central projection) bands.

In the central projection on the ground floor a wing-panel door under a round arch, accessed via two hard stone steps, (renewed around 1960) is fitted. In the arch spandrel neo-Gothic tracery is placed above the hard stone lintel (a six-lobed rose, flanked by fish-bladder motifs) which is filled with leaded glass panels (with IHS monogram and floral motifs). Next to the door a two-part hard stone letter box is built in with the text "Rector / Sisters". Above the arch a hard stone plate is built in with the text "H. Elisabeth / Gesticht". The first floor of the projection is separated from the lower zone by a hard stone drip moulding. The floor has a natural stone image of H. Elisabeth with console and baldachin, which is flanked by two narrow tall round-arch windows. Image and windows lie within an encompassing round-arch niche. In the top gable, which is crowned with a natural stone cross, a four-pane window is fitted.

The front facades of the side wings have on the ground floor two four-pane casement windows under a segmental arch. At the level of the stepped gable on the upper floor two four-pane windows under a round arch are fitted, above which a six-lobed round window. The stepped gables covered with natural stone plates are crowned by a wrought-iron finial.

In the interior is notably important the hall with painted stonework, draught lobby with wing-panel door and a semicircular fanlight executed in Empire style. On the ground floor and upper floor a corridor running over the full width of the building leads to the adjoining rooms. On the southern side there is a stairwell. The wooden staircase has simple wooden balusters and a likewise column-shaped main baluster. Throughout the building there are very simple plastered ceilings and panel doors. On the northern side a renovation took place around 1960. Among other things the stairwell located there was renewed.

The shallow front garden with lawns and young planting is separated from the street by a cast-iron spear-point fence with two gates. On the southern side stands a brick garden wall with cemented plinth and coping.

Valuation

The convent is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as an example of a spiritual development, namely the flourishing of religious orders and congregations in the late nineteenth century and is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the congregational convent in North Brabant. It is of architectural-historical importance because of the style and ornament and as an example of the simple manor-house-like congregational convent. It has ensemble values because of its coherence with the other buildings of the park.
