Inleiding

Introduction

The R.C. CHURCH BUILDING erected on the western side of the Hoofdstraat, in the centre of Liessel, dedicated to St. Willibrordus, was built between 1899 and 1901 and was designed by C. Franssen. It is a non-oriented Neo-Gothic cruciform basilica with an eastern tower. The church was consecrated on 30 April 1901. In 1944 the church suffered considerable damage from war. Shortly after the war, as a result of that damage, part of the masonry, vaults and roof, as well as the spire, were renewed under the direction of architect S.J.P. van der Sluijs (Eindhoven). The repairs were generally executed in neo-gothic style.

Description

The cruciform basilica has a nave of five bays, a single-aisle transept with three-sided closed arms, followed by one choir bay and a choir of two bays and a three-sided termination. The facades are laid in brick and are articulated by bands of yellow pressed stone, hardstone offsets, sills, coping stones and mouldings. Against the facades stand, depending on the height, two or three times stepped buttresses. The facades are finished with a chevron-arch frieze and mice-teeth mouldings.

The nave is furnished with triplets with stained-glass windows. In the transept terminations windows with plate-tracery are used, consisting of a coupled lancet, crowned by an oculus. In the choir simple lancet windows. The eastern tower has four storeys and an octagonal spire with roof dormers and flanking spirelets on the corners, between which pointed gables with clock faces. In the tower a portal is placed, with small columns against the edges, passing into archivolts. In the arch drum a limestone tympanum is placed with a representation of the teaching St. Willibrordus. The fixed wing door has ornamental wrought-iron fittings. The whole is crowned by a pediment, above which, among other things, a plate-tracery triplet. The second and third storey of the tower, which tapers somewhat towards the top, are decorated with blind niches, while gable vents are placed on the uppermost storey on all sides. The church has gabled roofs with slate in Maas covering, enlivened by a large number of neo-gothic roof dormers. The crossing is crowned by an octagonal roof turret with needle spire. Both choir, roof turret and flanking spirelets are provided with weathervanes with wrought-iron crownings. Doors are also placed under a pediment in the eastern facades of the side aisles. Notable are the tall, hardstone pinnacles which crown the southern masonry of the side aisles and flank the tower. Against the east and west sides of the choir stand two one-storey outbuildings belonging to the original construction under a gabled roof with half-hipped end, including the sacristy. On the northern and southern sides these outbuildings have a series of pointed-arch windows, fitted with anti-theft bars.

In the interior are notably a neo-gothic high altar (J. Thissen, Roermond 1903), a St. Joseph altar (J. Thissen, Roermond 1903), a Mary altar (J. Thissen, Roermond, 1903), two oak confessionals (J. Custers, Stratum, 1923), a neo-gothic baptismal font, various images of saints (St. Willibrordus, by J. Thissen, Roermond, 1903, St. Cunera, St. Elisabeth, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Cornelius, all by J. Custers, Stratum, 1924). The stained-glass windows by F. Nicolas, Roermond, were all lost in 1944. Between 1956 and 1964 new windows by P. Wiegersma were installed. The tower bells date from 1949 and were cast by the firm Eijsbouts-Lips, Asten.

Valuation.

The church is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of the development of Catholicism in the south and is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the village church. The building has architectural-historical importance through its style and careful detailing and is of art-historical importance through its interior components. The building is also of importance as an example of the work of architect Franssen, in which it represents the type of the modest but fully developed village church. It has been preserved in good condition.
