Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
On the eastern side of the Kerkplein stands the R.C. CHURCH, dedicated to St. Willibrordus, dating from 1914 and built to a design by C. Franssen. It is an oriented neo-Gothic cruciform basilica, which in 1933 was extended under the architecture of J. Franssen. On this occasion the side aisles of the nave were widened and heightened at the level of the second and third bays.
Description
The church building has a western tower, a nave of three bays, a single-aisled right-angled transept and a choir bay with a five-sided closure. The facades are laid in brick and are articulated by bands in yellow machine-pressed brick. Mouse-tooth and herringbone arch courses close off the facades. The building is covered by gabled roofs, provided with slate in Dutch bond. On the roof stand neo-Gothic roof dormers, while the silhouette is enlivened by a small roof turret at the crossing. The windows in nave and transept are provided with simple tracery, consisting of a double lancet, crowned by an oculus. In the clerestory the coupled motif is repeated. The apse has simple lancet windows.
The tower has two high storeys. The entrance portal with clamped wing door, provided with wrought-iron fittings, is set under a squat pointed arch, which closes off the portal. Above it rises on a four-part blind pointed arch frieze a tall pointed arch window with geometric tracery, above which the second storey rises, with pointed arch niches, sound holes and clock faces. This is crowned by a tall octagonal spire with flanking pinnacles. Against the southern facade stands a stair turret. The side aisles are provided with chapels on the western side under a separate hipped roof bordering the tower. Also in the corner between choir bay and transept stand chapels on the northern and southern sides. In 1933 an extension took place through the construction of corner chapels between nave and transept.
The interior is characterized by an elevation with granite piers with partly octagonal bases and moulded capitals, a pseudo-triforium and mortared cross-ribbed vaults. The original furnishings, as well as the altars, have been removed.
Valuation
The church is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical significance as a particular expression of the development of Catholicism in the south and is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the church building. It has architectural-historical significance through the style and careful detailing and is also of importance as a late example of the oeuvre of the architect Franssen. It has been well preserved and is a typical example of the formation of church villages in the Brabant Peel area.
