Inleiding

Description
Introduction
MUSEUM ("Flehite") with attached gatehouse, housed in three originally sixteenth-century terraced houses, which are registered as a single national monument under Breestraat 78-80-82. In 1898 it was established that the middle terraced house, in which the entire museum was then housed, was on the verge of collapse. The desired renovation was used as an opportunity to expand the museum. H. Kroes provided two designs for this purpose, a small symmetrical plan and a larger asymmetrical design. The second design was chosen. In this process, the rear facade was made into the front facade and vice versa. The museum was accessed via a neoclassical gatehouse with a narrow bridge with wrought-iron balustrade behind it from the Westsingel. For the function of antiquities museum, Dutch neo-Renaissance was deliberately chosen as the architectural style. The red brick facade is articulated horizontally by imitation ashlar courses and string and drip mouldings. Cross windows with shutters, shell motifs, claw pieces, shield-bearing lions are also features of this style.
The former front facade on the Breestraat was renovated by H. Kroes in sober forms.
During the 1978 restoration, most of the 19th-century interior components that architect Kroes had added to the museum disappeared.
Description
The museum is built on a rectangular plan with the long side parallel to the Westsingel. On this are three storeys with a gabled roof, with the ridge running parallel to the Westsingel. The roof contains dormers with shutters and pitched roofs.
Against the main volume, on the left and right, perpendicular to the front facade of the museum, two building sections of unequal size are placed, each provided with a stepped gable. The left extension, three bays wide, has two storeys with a gabled roof. The right extension is two bays wide, has one storey and is covered by a gabled roof. The ridge of both gabled roofs is set perpendicular to the main volume. Between both building masses, the small entrance section is placed, which projects in relation to the main volume and also has a stepped gable.
The central section of the main mass is articulated horizontally by a plastered plinth, string mouldings, imitation ashlar courses, imitation ashlar blocks around the windows and finished with a profiled wooden gutter on carved corbels. The windows are placed on drip mouldings. The relatively low first storey has a two-light window with leaded glass, spanned by a shallow faceted round arch with a shell motif in plaster in the spandrel. Ornamental wall anchors flank the arch. In the higher second storey is a cross window with leaded glass and shutters for the lower windows. The window is spanned by a segmental arch with a cock's comb. In the third storey a two-light window with leaded glass is placed, spanned by a segmental arch. Where the facade is not interrupted by the projecting building sections, the mentioned window pattern is repeated.
The projecting entrance section placed in the centre of the main mass comprises an authentic double clamped door, spanned by a round arch with a plastered panel in the spandrel, on which the word 'Flehite' is placed. The arch is framed by a stepped gable on which stands a natural stone shield-bearing lion.
The left extension is three bays wide and deep. The windows have the same structure as the windows in the first and second storeys of the main mass facade. The left side facade is blind and is articulated only horizontally by imitation ashlar courses. The front facade is crowned by a built-up projecting stepped gable, consisting of six steps, which are accentuated by attached imitation ashlar courses and string mouldings. In the middle of the first two step tiers is a cross window spanned by a segmental arch with a cock's comb. The cross window is flanked by two round arch spandrels, with a small plastered shell motif at the tops. In the third step the cock's comb is flanked by two banderoles bearing 'ANNO' and '1898'. The stepped gable is crowned by an ornamental vase.
The right extension has one bay. On the front is a cross window with leaded glass, the fanlights, spanned by a segmental arch. The stepped gable consists of six steps with a window with glazing bars in the middle of the second and third step. The sixth step is flanked by claw pieces and is crowned by a curved pediment on which stands an ornamental vase. The left side facade has a central section, flanked by windows with fanlights. In the right side facade there is only a cloister window with leaded glass far to the left.
The rear facade (Breestraat). In contrast to the facade on the Westsingel, H. Kroes left much of the existing facade intact on the Breestraat facade. The facade consists of a basement and two storeys and is divided into five equal bays with an entrance section in the central bay. This entrance with leaded glass fanlight is framed by a pilaster arrangement under a cornice. Above this is in the spandrel field a two-light window with leaded glass. The twice two bays on either side of the central axis also consist of a round arch spandrel with divided windows in a rectangular spandrel in the basement and above, separated by a drip moulding, cross windows. The facade is entirely plastered in cream colour, with detailing in neo-Renaissance style applied, such as relief ashlar bands and angle and end stones and the segmental arches above the cross and two-light windows. In addition, there are red and white shutters with hourglass motif for the windows in the first storey and string and cornice mouldings are applied. On the boundary between basement and first storey and between first and second storey are ornamental wall anchors. The two-light windows in the basement are finished by a round arch spandrel, located in a rectangular spandrel. On the splayed drip moulding the cross windows of the first storey are also in a spandrel field, which is finished with a shallow arch. Placed on a string moulding is a two-light window per bay in the second storey. Both these windows and the fanlights of the cross windows are executed in leaded glass.
Gatehouse.
Access to the museum is formed by a small bridge, in front of which in Neo-classical style, a wooden gatehouse is placed at the street side. Two pilasters, the pedestal of which with upright diamond decoration is placed on a natural stone base, flank the passage. Above this is a main entablature, in which the inscription 'MUSUEUM' under a strongly projecting pediment.
Resting on the same base as the main pilasters, smaller pilasters are situated in the sides, which support a profiled arch. In the centre this arch is provided with a faceted keystone. The spandrels are provided with profiled framing.
Access to the small bridge is closed by a clamped door. On either side of the gatehouse the bank of the Westsingel is brought up in the form of simple iron railwork, which is provided with some scrollwork.
The rear side of the gatehouse has the same arrangement.
Valuation
The 19th-century extension added to the medieval terraced houses of the museum is of general importance for its architectural historical value as an intact and rare example of a museum building, executed in Dutch neo-Renaissance. In the relationship between the original and added parts of the museum, the building demonstrates its construction history. The building with bridge and gatehouse possesses ensemble value with the adjacent terraced houses. The design and realised museum building occupies an important place in the oeuvre of H. Kroes.
