Inleiding

Introduction

The TOWNHOUSE, which forms the conclusion of a facade wall, is situated directly on the Langegracht, with its right facade bordering the Breestraat. Behind the building is a narrow, walled garden. The townhouse is part of a group of buildings, which all belonged to the Roman Catholic complex of the Elleboogkerk, which is located on the plot Langegracht 36. The building is remarkably richly decorated in proportion to the adjoining buildings. However, the background to this is not known.

On the basis of a sketch of the floor plan of the building and stylistic characteristics, W.H. Kam, municipal architect of Amersfoort in the period 1871-1909, can be identified as the architect with a construction year of 1878.

In the front facade a stone with the year date 1878 was installed in 1997. The stone falls outside the protection, as do the two small sculptures which are located in the second storey on the middle two wall piers, the small shed located in the back garden, which dates from a later period, and finally a later installed window, which is located lower right in the right facade.

Description

The townhouse, which is situated on a floor plan that becomes narrower towards the back, has a large cellar with a barrel vault - probably older than the building itself - two storeys and a hipped roof covered with smothered Dutch tiles. The richly decorated front facade is constructed in the neo-Renaissance style. The right side facade and rear facade, by contrast, are sober in character.

The front facade (east side) has three bays (two windows and a door). At the height of the floor levels ornamental wall anchors are provided. The wall piers are interrupted by six narrow whitewashed decorative horizontal bands. On the ground floor on the left is the entrance, next to it two cross windows and above, on the first floor, three cross windows. The door contains various stylised natural motifs, including rosettes and acroteria. The door and the cross windows have leaded glass fanlights and furthermore a sandstone plinth and sandstone underdorpels. Below the windows on the ground floor are sandstone panels with arches, which frame the cellar windows.

On the whitewashed voussoirs of the flat arches above the windows rosette motifs are applied. Above the flat arches whitewashed casements. In these on the first storey rosette motifs and on the second storey fan motifs are applied. These decorations are framed by an alternation of smooth and roughcast plasterwork with lining.

The facade is terminated by a profiled cornice with rosettes and carved corbels. In the line of the middle bay is a roof dormer with cross window, set in a moulding with stylised claw pieces executed in wood. The sober rear facade is slightly narrower than the front facade, consisting of two storeys, has two bays and is constructed of red brick. On the left a small shed, which dates from a later period. On the ground floor of the rear facade are two doors with fanlights, which date from a later period. Above the sash windows on the first floor, with glazing bars and fanlight are flat arches applied. Above the eaves line is a rectangular roof dormer with single-light window.

The right side facade has a closed character, has two storeys and is also constructed of red brick. Several windows are irregularly distributed across the facade, the window lower right dating from a later period.

The interior (two-aisle layout) consists of a suite of rooms on the ground floor, along which a long and narrow corridor runs on the left side. The kitchen is located at the rear of the building. The ceilings in the front and back room on the ground floor are richly decorated with natural motifs. In this front room and the front room above contain two sandstone fireplaces.

Valuation

The building is of general importance because of its architectural historical value as an intact and early example of a townhouse designed in neo-Renaissance form, as well as of ensemble value, as part of a uniform facade row, located on the Langegracht. In the oeuvre of W.H. Kam the residential building occupies an important place.
