Inleiding

Introduction

Hall church of the Old Catholic parish of Saint George, situated on the western corner of 't Zand and Boldersstraat. The church has a small forecourt, which on the left is bounded by the tower standing in the building line of the adjoining property. Before this church with sacristy was built according to a design by W. van Gent in 1927, there was a hidden church here from 1692 onwards. Prior to that, an orphanage was located here and even earlier a beguinage. The church forms the termination of a historic facade row consisting of properties that all have a Roman Catholic or Old Catholic background. The property adjoining the tower on the left was designed in 1899 as an Old Catholic rectory by architect H. Kroes.

The church building, given the parabolic-shaped entrance, the expressive brickwork and the detailing of, for example, the clock and in the interior in the structural essence with parabolic-shaped transverse arches, is shaped in the style of the Amsterdam School.

Various seventeenth-century interior elements (including seven paintings with scenes from the life of Christ and Mary) from the hidden church were incorporated into the new building. The carved oak communion rail from 1693, which serves as a partition between the altar and the nave, even served as the basic measurement for the present church. In the church there is an organ, which was built in 1870 by August Gern. The church still retains virtually the entire condition of 1927, including the carpet at the altar, which was shaped according to the pattern of the church floor. Only on the east side was a small extension added in 1964, which contains the access to the sacristy.

Description

The hall church is situated on a rectangular plan, with a narrower space for the priest's choir on the north side. The nave consists of four bays, each of which is provided with a stepped gable in the side facades. Nave and choir are symmetrical in form both on the exterior and interior. This also applies to the space located directly behind the church, which originally contained a 'schoolroom'.

The various spaces lying one behind another are indicated with height differences between the slate-covered gabled roofs. For the main volume of the church hall, the entrance is accommodated in a lower section. On the north side, below a lower roof, is the priest's choir, with in front of it the still lower section with the schoolroom. The projecting tower on the left side of the front facade has a gabled roof, crowned by a cross with a weather vane.

The front facade (south side) is dominated by the rectangular bell tower with, beside it and set back, a front facade of the central nave terminating in a stepped gable. In the centre of the facade is the entrance composition, flanked by two semicircular buttresses with three natural stone steps between them. The deep entrance is spanned by a parabolic vault of yellow brickwork. In the ridge of the vault is a parabolic lamp of leaded glass. The parabolic double doors are fitted with decorative ironwork. In the black-and-white tile floor beneath the vault is a geometric motif. In the side faces of the portal are entrances. The entrance is surrounded by a form laid with radiating bricks. The entrance is flanked on the left by one and on the right by two narrow windows. Above the entrance is a four-part window composition, consisting of narrow rectangular windows with leaded glass, separated from each other by a one-brick brick column. The middle two windows are one-third taller than the outer two windows. Directly below the top of the front facade is a small window. On the ridge, as a termination of the otherwise brick cornice, a natural stone cross is placed. The narrow tall tower, with a gabled roof between stepped gables, ridge perpendicular to the street, tapers upwards and has two narrow windows on the ground floor and one narrow window above. A sound hole, with a clock above, occupies the upper part of the tower, with a narrow window in the stepped gable. The right side facade of the tower has two relatively large windows on the ground floor.

The rear facade is extremely austere and pragmatic in design and shows the three roofs staggered in height above a single-storey wall. The stepped gable of the schoolroom has a rectangular chimney in the ridge, below which on the first floor are two narrow windows. On the left in the sacristy extension is a four-part transom window.

The view of the left side facade is partly obscured by the adjoining rectory. Three-quarters of the nave, however, is freestanding. The two middle of the four bays in which the nave of the church can be subdivided are crowned by stepped gables. In these bays are four narrow windows, which are separated from each other by three brick buttresses. The two middle windows are one and a half times as tall as the two outer windows. The windows are decorated with abstract-geometric leaded glass. The left bay has a straight cornice-topped facade, in which four equally tall narrow windows, also with leaded glass, are installed. In the slightly lower side wall of the priest's choir is a similar window pattern. In the again slightly lower side wall of the former schoolroom are double opening doors with multiple fanlights. In contrast to the front facade of the tower, the sound hole and the clock are located in the wider left side facade of the tower slightly to the right of centre.

The right side facade is in the main mirrored identically to the left side facade. The nave is symmetrical. On the right is an extension. The wall surface of the sacristy is blank. The lower extension to the left of it is of a later date.

The interior has been preserved in virtually intact condition, given the decoration of the floors, the detailing of walls, windows and ceiling, but also the choir stalls, church pews and the floor carpet at the altar.

Various older elements, such as a choir stall, an altarpiece, sculpture and seventeenth-century paintings have been reinstated in the new building. The organ with two manuals and pedal with 13 registers, made in 1872 by the organ builder A. Gern in London, making use of an important part of 18th-century pipework. The instrument was given a new organ case in 1977 when installed in Amersfoort, which is described as being of minor importance.

Valuation

The Old Catholic church of Saint George is of general importance because of its architectural-historical value as an intact example of a hall church, shaped in the style of the Amsterdam School with a coherence between exterior, interior and furnishings. The church building is also of ensemble value as a distinctive element in a series of buildings with an Old Catholic or Roman Catholic history. The hall church forms an important component in the oeuvre of architect W. van Gent.
