Inleiding
Het in een Ambachtelijke-Traditionele bouwtrant opgetrokken LIJKENHUISJE (metaarhuis) is in 1899 in opdracht van de Vereniging Centraal Israëlitische Oude-Mannen- en Vrouwenhuis gebouwd. Het was bij de Joodse gemeente als metaarhuisje in gebruik voor het opbaren van overledenen en het doen van rituele wassingen. Sinds de restauratie in 1994 heeft het metaarhuisje de functie van gedenkplaats. Het lijkenhuisje staat op het achtererf van Oosthaven 31 in de oosthoek van de tuin met de nokrichting haaks op dat van het hoofdgebouw. Het wordt aan twee zijden omsloten door TUINMUREN.
Omschrijving
Het éénlaags, uit ijsselsteen in kruisverband opgetrokken gebouwtje heeft een rechthoekig plattegrond onder een zadeldak met rode Tuile-du-Nordpannen. Rode baksteen is decoratief gebruikt voor de rondbogen boven de gietijzeren rondboogvensters, de rollagen/strekken boven de deuren, de sierbanden- en omlijstingen, de afdeklijsten en lekdorpels. De beide kopgevels zijn tuitgevels, die op de hoeken en in de top versierd zijn met forse vierkante pinakels. Deze zijn versierd met getrapt gemetselde spaarvelden en hebben een knopvormige bekroning. Op de oosthoek bevindt zich inplaats van een pinakel een schoorsteen. De tuitgevels worden afgesloten door een rode bakstenen rollaag. De symmetrisch ingedeelde voorgevel heeft in het midden een dubbele deur met tweeruits bovenlicht en op de zolder een houten zolderluik met kraaldelen. Aan weerszijden van de entreedeur bevindt zich een rondboogvenster. Onder het linker is een gedenksteen geplaatst van de laatste restauratie in 1994. Bij de linker (noordelijke) langsgevel zijn twee vergelijkbare rondboogvensters symmetrisch in de gevel geplaatst.
Inwendig bevindt zich tegen de achtermuur een plaquette, die (geplaatst tijdens de laatste restauratie) herinnert aan de periode 1940-1945.
Waardering
Het voormalige lijkenhuisje is van algemeen belang wegens architectuur- en cultuurhistorische waarde door zijn oorspronkelijke functie als goed voorbeeld van een lijkenhuisje uit het eind van de 19de eeuw in een rijk gedetailleerde Traditioneel-Ambachtelijke bouwtrant. Het herinnert aan de periode dat in het bijbehorende herenhuis een 'Joodsch Rusthuis' was gevestigd. Het is derhalve van belang vanwege de historische-ruimtelijke relatie met het huis.

Introduction
The MORTUARY CHAPEL (ritual bath house) built in a Craftsman-Traditional building style was constructed in 1899 on the orders of the Central Israelite Old People's Home Association. It was used by the Jewish community as a ritual bath house for the laying out of the deceased and the performance of ritual ablutions. Since its restoration in 1994, the ritual bath house has served as a memorial site. The mortuary chapel stands on the rear courtyard of Oosthaven 31 in the east corner of the garden with its ridge direction perpendicular to that of the main building. It is enclosed on two sides by GARDEN WALLS.
Description
The single-storey building, built from IJssel stone in English bond, has a rectangular plan beneath a gabled roof with red Tuile-du-Nord tiles. Red brick has been used decoratively for the round arches above the cast-iron round-arch windows, the roll courses above the doors, the decorative bands and frames, the coping strips and drip mouldings. Both end gables are spout gables, decorated on the corners and at the peak with substantial square pinnacles. These are decorated with stepped-laid pointing panels and have a knob-shaped finial. At the east corner there is a chimney in place of a pinnacle. The spout gables are finished with a red brick roll course. The symmetrically arranged front facade has a double door in the centre with two-pane fanlight and on the attic storey a wooden attic shutter with bead sections. On either side of the entrance door there is a round-arch window. Beneath the left one a commemorative stone has been placed from the last restoration in 1994. On the left (northern) side elevation are two similar round-arch windows symmetrically placed in the facade.
Inside, there is a plaque against the rear wall, which (placed during the last restoration) commemorates the period 1940-1945.
Valuation
The former mortuary chapel is of general importance due to its architectural and cultural-historical value by virtue of its original function as a fine example of a mortuary chapel from the end of the 19th century in richly detailed Craftsman-Traditional building style. It recalls the period when a 'Jewish Rest Home' was established in the adjoining mansion. It is therefore of importance due to the historical-spatial relationship with the house.
The structural components are reasonably intact in main form, material use and detailing.
