Inleiding

Introduction

The Ir. De Kock van Leeuwensluis was built in 1940-1942 by and to the design of engineers of the Provincial Water Authority, at the expense of the Rijnland Dijkgraafschap. The sluice complex was built as part of the large-scale improvement of the Gouwe and specifically for the closure of the Gouda section of the Rijnland waterboard area. The complex is located in the Nieuwe Gouwe, which is the connection between the city canals and the Gouwe canal. It concerns a combination of a LOCK and a CHECK SLUICE together with a SPILLWAY-INLET SLUICE, located in the Nieuwe Gouwe (the 1st Section of the Gouwe from 1898-1903), which is of great importance for the water management of the city and the city waterboard area. The double-acting sluices are fitted with horizontally movable roller gates running on rails, which allow the lock to be operated at both low and high water. Both sluice chambers are spanned by means of steel footbridges connected to the roller gates with rope stays.

Description

It concerns a sluice complex consisting of a lock with two roller gates, which has the gate recesses in the sluice heads on the side of Nieuwe Gouwe East Side and a check sluice (spillway-inlet sluice) with one gate, which has the gate recess in the sluice head on the Nieuwe Gouwe West Side.

The sluices are constructed from reinforced concrete with steel corners and edges and are largely fitted with steel pipe gates. The concrete partition with platform between the two sluice chambers contains among other things the recesses for the stop logs and the sluice gates and the steel bearings of the roller bridges. The roller gates and bridges move towards the "partition wall" as the sluices close. The roller bridges and roller gates move over an elevated walkway at this sluice complex. They are operated from the outer sluice heads by means of electrically driven winches. The gates (and bridges) can also be manually operated by means of a crank from the steel winch boxes. The gates and bridges are pulled by rolling carriages moving over running rails. For the movement of the roller gates, the connected roller bridges are used. When a sluice gate has to be closed, the roller bridge is first rolled over the opening. Subsequently (and partly simultaneously) the gate connected to the footbridge is rolled out of the recess and then closes - hanging from the footbridge - the opening. When a gate has to be opened, it is first rolled into the gate recess. Subsequently (and partly simultaneously) the footbridge is rolled onto the sluice head, whereby the sluice opening is freed. The roller bridges are entirely made of steel and fitted with rope stays, grating floors and fences. The heavy wooden roller gates are reinforced with a steel top edge. The running gear fitted with wheels is mounted on this, with which the roller gate runs over the steel edges of the gate recess. The four steel wheels of the rolling carriages run over rails and are connected by means of steel cables to the windlasses in the likewise steel winch boxes.

Valuation

The sluices are of general importance because of their cultural-historical and architectural-historical value and as an example of industrial heritage.

The sluices have cultural-historical value as a special expression of a typical development in sluice construction in the Netherlands.

The sluices are also of importance because of their recognisability and have ensemble value as an essential component of a large-scale water management structure, which is important both for navigation and for the water management of Gouda and surroundings.

The sluices have ensemble value and urban planning value because of their situation and because of the visual and functional coherence between the constituent components.

The sluices are also of importance because of the recognisability and integrity of the constituent components.

Because it is a combination of a double sluice with rolling sluice gates and roller bridges, there is also a question of rarity value.
