The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

Behind the choir of the St. Janskerk, the Van der Vorm-CHAPEL was built in 1934 in Neo-gothic style, part of the Raoul Wallenbergplantsoen complex. The purpose of the construction was to preserve the stained-glass windows from the former cloister of the Augustinian canons at Gouda. These glass panes from 1581 were originally intended for the cloister in the Land of Stein. After this cloister was destroyed by fire, the glass panes came to Gouda. The donor of the glass panes was Dirk Cornelisz. Reinegom. The Van der Vorm chapel was donated by Van der Vorm in memory of his mother.

N.B. The chapel derives its cultural-historical value in particular from the 16th-century glass panes. These glass panes should be described in more detail within the framework of an updating of the national heritage register.

Description

The chapel is constructed from an elongated octagonal ground plan and is connected via a rectangular intermediate section, which is built across a small watercourse, to the choir of the St. Jan. This intermediate section is built across a small watercourse. The chapel is covered by an octagonal hipped roof covered with slate in Maas cover tile pattern; the intermediate section under a lower placed slate hipped roof with the ridge height slightly below the roof edge of the chapel; in the long roof slope is a tall constructed masonry chimney. The whole is constructed in handmade brick in cross bond on a tufa plinth. On the corners sandstone blocks are incorporated—at the height of the pointed arch windows. The facades are finished off by stepwise projecting mouldings. The seven, multi-part pointed arch windows have sandstone mouldings (in three different forms of tracery) and a sandstone key stone in the point. The drip mouldings consist of brick.

The intermediate section is built across the water by means of a brick arch consisting of a number of rows. It has on the south side an elongated horizontal window strip. The fixed wooden windows contain leaded glass. On the north side—between intermediate section and choir—there is a separate, projecting entrance section. This entrance consists of a neck gable-like facade with sandstone capping, a sandstone step, a wooden door and a relief with a portrait of the founder above the door. Characteristic in the interior are the wooden vaults with ridge roof ceilings, which are closed off with carved heads. In the windows there is stained glass in lead.
