Inleiding
Het KAASPAKHUIS met kantoor is gebouwd in 1919 in Traditioneel-Ambachtelijke stijl naar ontwerp van architect P.D. Stuurman uit Waddinxveen. Vóór het bestaande pakhuis is in 1949 een nieuw kantoorgedeelte gebouwd in Zakelijk Expressionistische stijl. In het trappenhuis van het kantoor bevindt zich een brandschildering, die vervaardigd is door atelier W. Bogtman te Haarlem.
NB. 1. De eerste bouwlaag van de voorgevel, met inrijdeuren en een entree is later gewijzigd. Ook het kantoorgedeelte is gedeeltelijk gemoderniseerd ten behoeve van de bedrijfsvoering.
NB. 2. In het pakhuis erachter zijn de ramen dichtgezet in verband met de beheersing van de luchtvochtigheid. In de oorspronkelijke situatie dienden de ramen om de pakhuisruimten te ventileren; dit geschiedt nu m.b.v. een luchtverversingssysteem.
Omschrijving
Het kaaspakhuis met kantoor is vanuit een langgerekte, rechthoekige plattegrond opgetrokken in vier lagen onder een schilddak gedekt met gesmoorde kruispannen; de kap van het kantoorgedeelte is voorzien van een overstek. Het pand staat op een hellend terrein, dat oploopt naar de straatzijde en heeft een souterrainniveau. De bakstenen gevels bestaan uit machinale steen, die in kruisverband met knipvoeg opgemetseld is; rondom is een gecementeerde plint aangebracht, die zich naar achtertoe vergroot, bij de achtergevel beslaat de plint de gehele hoogte van het kelderniveau.
De nagenoeg symmetrische voorgevel is sterk horizontaal geleed door de plint en de licht uitkragende geveldelen, die afgesloten worden met grindbetonnen lijsten. De eerste laag heeft gewijzigde inrijdeuren en rechts de entree. Rond de deuren en ter afsluiting van de eerste laag bevindt zich een band van grindbeton. In de tweede laag is een reeks kleine, rechthoekige vensters aangebracht. Op de derde en vierde laag zijn samengestelde vensters geplaatst met grote vaste ramen, die worden geflankeerd door zijlichten met roedeverdeling en draairamen. De zijgevels hebben over de gehele lengte langgerekte, rechtgesloten vensters op alle bouwlagen. De oostgevel is op de begane grond en via loopbruggen gedeeltelijk verbonden met het kaaspakhuis ernaast. De achtergevel heeft op iedere bouwlaag reeksen van rechthoekige vensters.
INTERIEUR
De historische indeling van het interieur van het kantoor is grotendeels behouden. Op de begane grond bevindt zich een entree met een trappenhuis naar de tweede verdieping. Op de tweede verdieping bevindt zich een hal met rondom kantoorruimten, waaronder directie- en bestuurskamer. Ook op de derde verdieping bevinden zich kantoorruimten. Het trappenhuis is uitgevoerd met een bordestrap en is voorzien van een betegelde trappaal, lambrizering (bestaande uit geglazuurde groene en zwarte tegels) en ramen met gekleurd glas-in-lood in Art Deco-stijl en brandschilderingen.
Ook het pakhuis heeft zijn oorspronkelijke indeling behouden met op de begane grond pakruimten en de paraffineafdeling en op de verdiepingen de oorspronkelijke, houten kaasstellingen haaks op en aan weerszijden van het gangpad in het midden. De planken van de oorspronkelijke kaasstellingen variëren in diepte, afhankelijk van het gewicht (de omvang) van de kazen.
Waardering
Het kaaspakhuis met kantoor aan de Wachtelstraat 52/52A is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde.
Het pakhuis heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als uitdrukking van een functie en vanwege de rol die het speelt in de geschiedenis van de kaasproduktie te Gouda.
Het pakhuis met bijbehorend interieur heeft architectuur-historische waarde als representatief voorbeeld van een bouwtype en vanwege de historische indeling van het pakhuisgedeelte. In het kantoorgedeelte is met name het trappenhuis van belang.

Description
The cheese warehouse with office is built on an elongated, rectangular ground plan in four storeys under a hipped roof covered with interlocking roof tiles; the roof of the office section has an overhang. The building stands on sloping ground, which rises towards the street side and has a basement level. The brick facades consist of machine-made brick, laid in English bond with cut joint; a cemented plinth runs around the building, which increases in size towards the rear, and at the rear facade the plinth covers the entire height of the basement level.
The nearly symmetrical front facade is strongly articulated horizontally by the plinth and the slightly projecting facade sections, which are terminated with concrete aggregate lists. The first storey has altered loading doors and the entrance on the right. Around the doors and at the end of the first storey there is a band of concrete aggregate. In the second storey a series of small, rectangular windows has been installed. On the third and fourth storeys composite windows have been placed with large fixed panes, flanked by side lights with glazing bars and casement windows. The side facades have along their entire length elongated, straight-edged windows on all storeys. The east facade is on the ground floor and via footbridges partially connected with the cheese warehouse next to it. The rear facade has on each storey series of rectangular windows.
INTERIOR
The historical layout of the interior of the office has been largely preserved. On the ground floor there is an entrance with a stairwell to the second floor. On the second floor there is a hall with office rooms around it, including a director's and board room. Office rooms are also located on the third floor. The stairwell is executed with a dog-leg stair and is provided with a tiled newel post, wainscoting (consisting of glazed green and black tiles) and windows with coloured stained and leaded glass in Art Deco style and painted glass windows.
The warehouse has also retained its original layout with on the ground floor storage spaces and the paraffin department and on the floors the original, wooden cheese racks perpendicular to and on either side of the central corridor. The shelves of the original cheese racks vary in depth, depending on the weight (size) of the cheeses.
