Inleiding

Description
Introduction
188 OVERHEAD LINE PORTALS on the track section Utrecht-Hilversum which was laid in 1863 by the Hollandse IJzeren Spoorweg Maatschappij (HIJSM). In 1874 only Maartensdijk had a station. In 1938 concrete overhead line portals were designed for the electrification of the twelve-kilometre track section from the railway crossing at the Oude Amersfoortseweg in Hilversum to Utrecht at the swimming pool at Blauwkapel. Concrete was chosen due to metal shortage. The arches were designed by engineer J.L.A. Cuperus of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen and manufactured by Wernink's Betonmaatschappij at Leiden. Assembly, from 1941 onwards, took place on site. 188 portals were manufactured in two types: open and closed. These closed portals are in principle placed every 1.5 kilometres for the attachment of extra guy cables. The open portals saved material and promoted visibility of the signals.
Description
The track section Utrecht-Hilversum covers approximately 6.9 kilometres on Maartensdijk territory and is of value due to the concrete overhead line portals. The total number of portals to be protected on the track section Utrecht-Hilversum, including those on the territory of the municipality of Hilversum, amounts to 188. With the exception of the portals placed directly after the viaducts, all are manufactured in the same principal form from reinforced concrete. The portals have pointed-arch-shaped members and are constructed from two prefabricated half-arch sections which were assembled on site on a concrete base. In total 166 portals have an open framework construction. 22 portals are closed. The metal guides at the heart of the arch are V-shaped.
Valuation
The track section is of general importance due to the overhead line portals. These are of architectural-historical value due to their distinctive principal form and as an almost intact and rare series of prefabricated concrete overhead line portals in the Netherlands. Of cultural-historical value due to its history of origin as well as of ensemble value due to its very striking alignment in series form on the railway line Utrecht-Hilversum, parallel to the Provincial and national road.
