Inleiding
R.K. PATRONAATSSGEBOUW 'St Antonius', in 1916 in rationalistische stijl gebouwd, vertoont wat betreft materialen en vormgeving kenmerken van het Berlagianisme. Het pand heeft een opvallende ligging in het verlengde van de Visbrug, schuin tegenover het stadhuis op de hoek met de Oude Huygensteeg.
Omschrijving
Het PAND is opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond en bestaat uit twee bouwdelen: een twee bouwlagen tellend deel onder een zadeldak evenwijdig aan de Kapellestraat en een zaalgedeelte van één bouwlaag met de nok haaks op het voorste bouwdeel. De kappen zijn gedekt met rode verbeterde Hollandse pannen. Onder de dakrand zijn de gevels uitgevoerd met een gemetseld baksteenfries.
De voor- of westgevel is symmetrisch van indeling met in het midden in de eerste bouwlaag een door de toepassing van natuursteen geaccentueerd en als Vlaamse gevel eindigend risaliet met portiek. De entree bestaat uit dubbele deuren en is te bereiken door een trap van drie treden. Het portiek heeft een latei met getoogde onderzijde, die is voorzien van gestileerde motieven met art nouveau-invloeden. In de latei vermeldt het bouwjaar `anno 1916'. Erboven zijn een viertal openingen onder een tableau met getoogde lijst waar een medaillon met reliëf met de Heilige Antonius en het Christuskind. Ter weerszijden een reliëf met gestileerd bloemmotief. Eronder staat de tekst: `Sint Antonius Patronaat'. Daarboven bevat het risaliet twee vensters. In de top is een staand ovaal venster gezet. De tuit van de gevel met kruis is van natuursteen evenals de schouderstukken van gevel. Aan weerszijden van het risaliet bevat de gevel in beide bouwlagen twee vensters. De hoek met de linkerzijgevel is ter hoogte van de eerste bouwlaag afgerond en op halve hoogte uitgebouwd en voorzien van een binnen het muurvlak blijvend balkon met bakstenen balustrade boven een hardstenen kraagsteen. Erachter is de hoek afgeschuind en bevat deze een deur. Erboven kraagt de gevel uit en wordt deze onder het fries bekroond door een hardstenen ornament. De linkerzijgevel van het hoofdgebouw heeft een topgevel en bevat in beide bouwlagen twee vensters en in de top een staand ovaal venster. Links naast de topgevel is een schoorsteen gezet. De linkerzijgevel van het zaalgedeelte is geleed in vier delen, bestaande uit spaarvelden met lisenen. In de middelste velden zijn vensters gezet.
De achtergevel bevat een tweetal vensters met horizontale roede.
Het interieur bevat onder andere een grote zaal die is uitgerust met een toneel met deels oorspronkelijke coulissen.
Waardering
Het patronaatsgebouw is van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een patronaatsgebouw in rationalistische stijl. Het is van cultuurhistorische waarde als uitdrukking van het rooms-katholieke verenigingsleven in Oudewater. Het gebouw is van ensemblewaarde vanwege de markante ligging in het verlengde van de Visbrug, schuin tegenover het stadhuis.

Description
The BUILDING is erected on a rectangular plan and consists of two structural components: a part with two storeys under a gabled roof parallel to the Kapellestraat and a hall section of one storey with the ridge at right angles to the front part. The roofs are covered with red improved Dutch tiles. Below the roof edge, the facades are executed with a moulded brick frieze.
The front or west facade is symmetrical in layout with in the middle on the first storey a risalit accentuated by the application of natural stone and ending as a Flemish gable with a portico. The entrance consists of double doors and is accessed by a flight of three steps. The portico has a lintel with an arched underside, which is provided with stylised motifs with Art Nouveau influences. In the lintel the building year is noted 'anno 1916'. Above are four openings under a panel with an arched moulding where a medallion with relief of Saint Antonius and the Christ Child. On either side a relief with stylised floral motif. Below is the text: 'Sint Antonius Patronaat'. Above this the risalit contains two windows. At the top a standing oval window is placed. The spout of the facade with cross is of natural stone as are the shoulder pieces of the facade. On either side of the risalit the facade contains two windows in both storeys. The corner with the left side facade is rounded at the level of the first storey and extended halfway up and provided with a balcony remaining within the wall plane with brick balustrade above a stone corbel. Behind this the corner is chamfered and contains a door. Above it the facade projects and is crowned below the frieze by a stone ornament. The left side facade of the main building has a stepped gable and contains two windows in both storeys and at the top a standing oval window. To the left of the stepped gable a chimney is placed. The left side facade of the hall section is divided into four parts, consisting of spandrels with pilasters. Windows are placed in the middle sections.
The rear facade contains two windows with horizontal glazing bars.
The interior contains among other things a large hall equipped with a stage with partly original scenery.
Valuation
The patronage building is of general importance because of its architectural historical value as an example of a patronage building in rationalist style. It is of cultural historical value as an expression of Catholic association life in Oudewater. The building is of ensemble value because of its striking location in line with the Visbrug, diagonally opposite the town hall.
