Omschrijving

Description

RECTORY on the north side of the R.C. church 'St Franciscus' erected in a style influenced by the neo-Renaissance. The rectory is separated from the road by a plantation and connected to this church by means of a lower intermediate building.

The rectory consists of two building sections on a nearly rectangular ground plan and has two storeys under a composite roof structure. The left building section is covered by a gabled roof with the ridge perpendicular to the street, the right -slightly lower building section- by a mansard roof. The arch drums provided with hardstone elements above the windows divided by glazing bars into six-paned lights are decorated with yellow-red coloured brick patterns. Below the eaves a moulded brick frieze has been placed.

The front facade on the Kapellestraat is executed above a hardstone plinth with hardstone accents in the arches above the windows. The facade has on the left a risalit with corner pilasters and a spout gable with shoulders. The first storey contains two coupled windows, separated by a mural pier with hardstone colonette, under one segmental arch. The second storey contains two windows, separated by a mural pier. At the top, above a dentil frieze, a window is placed.

To the right of the gable is the main entrance for which a two-sided open portal with pointed arches has been placed. On the right a staircase with three steps leads to the front door which is executed with wooden letter panels. Around the door is a brick tracery with side and fanlight provided with leaded glass and ornamental ironwork grilles. To the right of the entrance the facade contains an identical window as in the risalit. In the second storey on the left a door has been placed, which provides access to the balcony above the portal. On the right the facade contains two windows, separated by a mural pier.

The left side facade contains in both storeys a number of windows. Against the facade on the left a non-original extension has been built which falls outside the protection. The rear facade is divided by pilasters and has on the right a gable with shoulders and spout. The first storey contains a non-original window, the second storey a two-light window and the top a single window. Against the rear facade on the left a three-sided extension has been built with modified structure. The second storey above the extension contains a two-light window and a door.

Valuation

The rectory is of general interest because of its architectural-historical value as an example of a rectory in a style influenced by neo-Renaissance by architect E.J. Margry as well as of ensemble value because of its location in relation to the church and the Kapellestraat.
