Inleiding

Introduction

In 1879-1881 remodelled into a PARSONAGE according to a design by Hoorn architect A.C Bleijs (1842-1912). According to the building permit application of 14 August 1879, the remodelling in eclectic style consisted of "... the construction of a new front facade, a storey and a kitchen building behind the plot ...". The building is located on the southwestern side of the Grote Noord and stands directly beside the monumental St. Cyriacus and Francis Church, which dates from the same period (1879-1882) and is already protected as a national monument. Until 1912, when a large new parsonage was completed on the northwestern side of the church, the building served as a parsonage.

Description

Former parsonage on an approximately rectangular floor plan, three storeys high beneath a hipped roof covered with reused and improved Dutch tiles.

The rendered front facade (NE) is raised above a granite plinth in pink calcareous sandstone alternated with artificial stone for, among other things, the window and door surrounds, bands and cornices. On the ground floor on the left is a rounded panel door set slightly back and flanked by narrow sidelights with floral decorative ironwork featuring floral motifs. Above the segmental arch of the artificial stone door surround is a likewise artificial stone two-light window with two rounded stained-glass lights separated by a small column. To the right of the door, the ground floor has two tall round-arched windows fitted with sash windows and artificial stone surrounds. The drip moulding of both windows, like the plinth beneath them, is executed in granite. Above all windows on the ground floor is a keystone. The first floor is separated from the ground floor by an artificial stone band and cornice, which also functions as a drip moulding for the floor windows. The three windows are fitted with sash windows, stained-glass fanlights with mirror arch shape and cast-iron French balconies with floral motifs. The windows are crowned by artificial stone pediments resting on a band interrupted by the fanlights. An artificial stone cornice separates the first from the second floor. The latter has three sash windows with rounded fanlights fitted with stained glass and small, but richly detailed cast-iron French balconies. The segmental arches above the windows have a keystone with recessed central panel. On either side of the fanlights is a profiled corbel with a small column bearing a knop capital at the height of the architrave of the closing main cornice. On the four capitals rest lion heads supporting the wooden cornice. The main cornice is fitted with a brick frieze and is interrupted in the middle by an inward-turning round-arched attic window around which the cornice continues in a round arch (with keystone).

On the side and rear facades there is a cast-iron guttering. The plastered right side facade (NW) is fitted with wall anchors and has a two-part basement window halfway up. Centrally in the second storey from left to right a narrow three-pane sash window, a six-pane sash window, a sash window and a four-pane window. Halfway up the second floor are two T-windows. The partially plastered left side facade (SE) has centrally in the third storey at the height of the rear landing a broad eight-pane window fitted with muslin glass and to the left of this a four-pane sash window fitted with muslin glass; the upper panes in both windows have a round-arched shape.

The cemented rear facade (SW) has on the ground floor on the right a door with high two-part fanlight and on the left a double panel door flanked by sidelights with a total of four fanlights above. Both the first and second floors have two windows, of which the T-window on the left on the second floor is still original.

On the rear side a brick garden wall. On the left this adjoins the church. On the left and right a door giving access to the parsonage garden.

The interior contains, among other things, a white marble floor and a round-arched shopfront with draught door in the hallway, stucco ceilings with floral central ornaments in the vestibule, the front room and the connecting room, panel wainscoting and folding blinds in the front room, a beam ceiling in the back room, and oak-wood stairs with principal balusters crowned by a decorative ball. Striking is the light in the floor dating from the time of construction between the landing of the first and second floor. Through this the landing on the first floor receives light from the aforementioned window section at the height of the landing on the second floor. The undivided attic has a floor of broad boards and a boarded roof truss structure. Parts of the interior and the layout were renewed in 1985-86.

Valuation

The building is of general importance due to its architectural historical and cultural historical value as a well-preserved example of a parsonage from the last quarter of the 19th century, constructed in eclectic style. The building has ensemble value in relation to the adjacent St. Cyriacus and Francis Church and situational value because of its image-forming location on the Grote Noord.
