Inleiding
De tussen 1880-1900 gebouwde en rond 1930 herbouwde SCHUTSLUIS, genaamd de Haanwijkersluis, is gelegen in de Oude Rijn en vormde de kering tussen de polders Haanwijk en Bijleveld. De sluis komt reeds voor op de militair topografische kaart van 1849. De Oude Rijn was een druk bevaren rivier die diende als hoofdverbindingsroute tussen Leiden-Woerden en Utrecht. Met name boeren en tuinders lieten hun producten per schip vervoeren. Oorspronkelijk was in de sluis tegen de kolkwanden een houten beschoeiing aangebracht. De loopbrug en hekken zijn modern. Een deel van de sluisdeuren is in 1991 vervangen. De Hollandse kade, ten zuiden van de sluis, vormt de scheiding tussen de twee polders.
Omschrijving
De in de Oude Rijn gelegen dubbel kerende schutsluis bestaat uit bakstenen kolkwanden met iets verhoogde, uitgebouwde sluishoofden die voorzien zijn van natuurstenen dekplaten. In elk sluishoofd bevinden zich twee stel houten puntdeuren. Elk paar deuren bevat een rinket (schuif) met ijzeren bedieningsstang. Op alle deuren is een eenvoudig smeedijzeren hekje met ronde knoppen gezet. De sluis meet tussen de binnendeuren 18 meter en tussen de buitendeuren 21 meter. De doorvaartbreedte bedraagt 3.10 meter.

The lock, built between 1880-1900 and rebuilt around 1930, called the Haanwijkersluis, is located in the Oude Rijn and formed the barrier between the polders Haanwijk and Bijleveld.
