Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
The TOWN HALL was built in 1939-1940 according to designs by architect Edmond Nijsten in the style of the Delft School.
The building suffered serious damage during the Second World War and was rebuilt in 1950. The town hall was substantially enlarged in 1976-1978, with the interior also being adapted in the Den Bosch School style. In 2001 the extension in the Den Bosch School style was modified to meet contemporary requirements.
Description.
The three-storey building has a rectangular floor plan and a gabled roof with black, newly restored Dutch roof tiles. The facades are built of machine-made brick with trachyte accents. The front facade, like the rear facade, is a spout gable with wrought-iron ornamental wall anchors and high shoulders. A stoop with a brick parapet wall and ornamental spheres accompanies the steps on both sides. On the left at the corner a cornerstone was laid by Mayor Van der Heijden on 5 April 1939. The glazed double doors with herringbone pattern are located in a shallow porch with an arched fanlight with geometric glazing. Both the porch and the fanlight are bordered by substantial natural stone blocks. On each side a wrought-iron lantern and a cross window with half shutters, above which a relieving arch in the masonry. On the first floor there are three cross windows, along with the rest simplified and renewed in 1976. In the top gable a terracotta tile panel is placed. It is a sundial with the signs of the zodiac and the year 1939. This panel was made by Toon Ninaber van Eyben. The right side facade is enclosed by the new construction from 1978, which also applies to a small part of the rear facade. Of the rear facade one can see three four-pane windows, above them three cross windows of the bel étage. Above these are again three four-pane cross windows, although the left one is partly hidden from view by the new construction. The left side facade, which faces towards the Town Hall Square, is richly executed. At the corners double four-pane windows and above them cross windows with half shutters. Above this is a loggia with glass doors. The whole rests on natural stone corbels with round arches. The brick balustrade is decorated with ornamental brickwork, upon which four trachyte columns rise, with round arches. A triangular natural stone tympanum beneath a gabled roof crowns it all and is provided with a scroll bearing the name Drunen and the municipal coat of arms. The decoration with round arches is continued under the eaves as a round arch frieze. Via the main entrance one enters a draught lobby with an arched ceiling, whose brick walls and ceiling are whitewashed. In this lobby two natural stone plaques are mounted on the right. The first states that the town hall was founded under Mayor Mr. R.J.Th. van der Heijden, by B.N.A. architect Edmond Nijsten. The second states that the town hall was largely renewed in 1944 by war damage and was restored and rebuilt by Nijsten in 1950.
Above the glass panel doors to the hall a diamond-shaped tile is placed in grey and beige. Depicted is St. Crispijn at work, as a shoemaker. Directly to the left and right are two rooms with a striking beam ceiling. These ceilings are namely strongly lowered along the entire length at the entrance; the beams also change direction at the large high section. The large hall is broken through on the right towards the new construction. On the left is a narrow staircase that leads to the work floor below, with various service rooms; in 2001 this narrow staircase was extended to the second floor at the instigation of the fire brigade. Straight ahead is the wedding hall, furnished in 1978 with Den Bosch School furniture and doors, the Den Bosch School furniture was replaced in 2002 by contemporary furniture. On the floor above is the council chamber; the council chamber has contained a kitchen and a work café since 2001. This hall borders on the loggia at the Town Hall Square. In the hall is finally placed a plaque stating that the renewed town hall was put into use on 2 May 1978. The renovated office section was put back into use as a town hall in 2002.
Valuation.
The town hall is of general importance. It has cultural-historical importance as an example of administrative development. Architecturally it is of importance because of the style and the place in the architect's oeuvre. The building is important because of the relative integrity of its exterior.
