Inleiding.
GRENSPAAL, vervaardigd en geplaatst in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw in Ambachtelijk-Traditionele stijl. De paal diende ter afbakening van het gebied van de toenmalige gemeente Herpt en Bern. Deze gemeente werd door de kanalisatie van de Bergse Maas (1888-1904) als het ware doormidden gesneden waarbij Herpt en Bern van elkaar gescheiden werden. Bern kwam pas in 1958 onder Gelders bestuur.
Omschrijving.
De grenspaal is gelegen bovenop de Hoge Maasdijk en is van hardstenen met een gebeitelde inscriptie "HERPT EN BERN", verwijzend naar de toenmalige gemeente. De paal heeft een vierkante grondslag met afgeschuinde hoeken met een uitkragend gedeelte waarop de inscriptie en een afgeronde top. De paal steekt circa 50 centimeter boven het maaiveld uit.
Waardering.
De grenspaal is van algemeen belang wegens de cultuurhistorisch waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van de landschappelijke en bestuurlijke ontwikkelingen waaraan dit gebied heeft blootgestaan door de kanalisatie van de Bergse Maas en het opheffen van Herpt en Bern als zelfstandige gemeente. De grenspaal is van belang vanwege de zeldzaamheid van dergelijk straatmeubilair.

Description
Introduction.
BOUNDARY MARKER, manufactured and placed in the second half of the nineteenth century in Artisanal-Traditional style. The marker served to demarcate the area of the former municipality of Herpt en Bern. This municipality was as it were cut in half by the canalisation of the Bergse Maas (1888-1904), whereby Herpt and Bern were separated from each other. Bern only came under Gelderland administration in 1958.
Description.
The boundary marker is located on top of the Hoge Maasdijk and is of hard stone with a chiselled inscription "HERPT EN BERN", referring to the former municipality. The marker has a square ground plan with bevelled corners with a projecting section on which the inscription and a rounded top are located. The marker projects approximately 50 centimetres above ground level.
Valuation.
The boundary marker is of general importance because of its cultural-historical value as a particular expression of the landscape and administrative developments to which this area has been subjected by the canalisation of the Bergse Maas and the dissolution of Herpt and Bern as an independent municipality. The boundary marker is important because of the rarity of such street furniture.
