The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

RESIDENCE with medical practice, built in 1895 for Louis and George Kauling. The building style contains elements of Neo-Renaissance. The house stands above ground level and is surrounded by a newly built platform.

Description.

Two-storey brick building of blocky form with a plastered plinth. The house has a rectangular floor plan beneath a mansard roof whose ridge runs parallel to the street. The top of the roof is covered with roof felt, the roof tiles below it with Spanish tiles.

The front facade comprises five bays and has a symmetrical layout. The central bay and corners of the building are marked by pilaster strips. Friezes below the eaves line and below the string course between the storeys are covered with tiles bearing decorative geometric patterns. At the location of the central bay these tile bands are interrupted, on the upper storey in favour of the balcony, below the eaves a tile mosaic and tiles depicting an Aesculapian serpent, a mortar and pestle and sunflowers have been installed.

In the middle of the front facade the door has been recently reinstated. Above it is a rectangular balcony with wrought-iron railings on large consoles with lion heads.

This console form, but slightly smaller, reappears at the top of the pilaster strips below the eaves. The central bay is crowned by a dormer window with classical surrounds. The large arched sash windows with small glazing bars have all been renewed with plastic frames. In the segmental arches above are impost and keystone stones plastered, on the arch rings diamond-headed studs have been applied. The left side facade has windows as on the front, beneath moulded segmental arches. Against this facade stands a three-sided projection beneath a pitched roof. The right side facade has an entrance at the rear in the facade beneath a canopy, above it a large circular window has been installed. In front of it are windows including a tall narrow window which replaces a door. Against the rear facade, in line with the right side facade, is a right-angled extension beneath a gabled roof, the roof is covered with Spanish tiles.

In the rear facade of the main mass are on the upper storey small circular windows with iron frames present. In the interior parts of the original layout and furnishings have been preserved. Examples of these include among others the corridor, running transversely in the right part of the house with staircase, and the internal shutters in the living room.
