Inleiding.
WOONHUIS, gebouwd in 1906 naar ontwerp van architect A.J. de Bruijn. Het pand op de hoek van de Boulevard Antverpia met de Badhuisstraat vertoont kenmerken van de Art-Nouveau. Het huis werd als onderdeel van een blok woningen gebouwd in opdracht van de verzekeringsmaatschappij Antverpia. Alleen het hoekpand wordt beschermd als representatief voor het hele blok. In 1992 vond een grondige restauratie plaats.
Omschrijving.
Het huis is twee bouwlagen hoog op een rechthoekige plattegrond onder een samengesteld zadeldak met eindschild. Het heeft een afgeschuinde hoek met een loggia en toren-achtige opbouw onder een koepeldak. Links daarvan, aan de Boulevard Antverpia heeft de gevel een halve topgevel, aan de zijde van de Badhuisstraat wordt de gevel afgesloten door een hele topgevel. Het object is uitgevoerd in baksteen op een bezette plint. Speklagen en ontlastingsbogen zijn in gele baksteen en grijze cementsteen aangebracht, op dezelfde wijze is direkt onder de goot een band met metselmozaïek gemaakt. Het dak is gedekt met leien. Vernieuwde deuren liggen iets verdiept boven een natuurstenen trapje. De segmentbogen erboven zijn voorzien van decoratieve sluitstenen. De rondboogramen op de begane grond hebben een halfrond bovenlicht, in de afgeschuinde hoek is een staand raam aangebracht. Erboven een trapsgewijze overkraging naar een hoek met loggia, balustrade en bakstenen hoekpijler. Op de verdieping zijn naar binnen draaiende ramen onder segmentbogen geplaatst. Boven de deur aan de Badhuisstraat 44 is een luchtboog met gepleisterde afwerking naar het naastgelegen tweelaagse bouwdeel. De topgevel is voorzien van een gepleisterde band met opschrift "ANTVERPIA". Het ontbrekende deel van de tekst ("BOULEVARD") is op een ander pand aan de Badhuisstraat aangebracht.
Waardering.
Het object is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde, het is van belang als uitdrukking van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling van de stad als gevolg van de aanleg en uitbouw van de spoorverbindingen. Het is van architectuurhistorisch belang wegens materiaalgebruik en ornamentiek, waarbij motieven uit de Nederlandse en Vlaamse architectuur met elkaar worden vermengd. The object is executed in brick on a rusticated plinth. Bands and relieving arches are constructed in yellow brick and grey cement stone, in the same manner a band with brick mosaic is made directly beneath the gutter. The roof is covered with slate. Renewed doors are set slightly recessed above a natural stone step. The segmental arches above are provided with decorative voussoirs. The round-arch frames on the ground floor have a semicircular fanlight, in the chamfered corner a vertical window is installed. Above it a step-like projection towards a corner with loggia, balustrade and brick corner pilaster. On the storey are windows opening inwards placed under segmental arches. Above the door at Badhuisstraat 44 is a relieving arch with plastered finish leading to the adjacent two-storey building section. The top gable is provided with a plastered band with the inscription "ANTVERPIA". The missing part of the text ("BOULEVARD") is placed on another building at the Badhuisstraat.
Valuation.
The object is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value, it is of significance as an expression of the socio-economic development of the city as a result of the construction and expansion of the railway connections. It is of architectural-historical significance because of material use and ornamentation, whereby motifs from Dutch and Flemish architecture are blended with one another. It has ensemble value as a sight-determining corner building, part of a larger whole of dwellings on Boulevard Antverpia, Badhuisstraat and Hulsdonksestraat.
