Inleiding.

Introduction.

The SHOP adjoining HOTEL named Mariahoek was built in 1900 according to the design of C.P. van Genk on behalf of the widow P. Coetermans from Antwerp, in the Neo-Renaissance style. The upper storey was intended as a hotel, the ground floor as a shop, N.V. Cahen's Clothing Store. In 1912 four narrow windows on the east side of the ground floor were replaced by two large windows, analogous to those on the south side. The shop use has been retained; the upper storeys are now in use as a residence. During a renovation of around 1985 the window layout was partly simplified, but kept in style.

Description.

The four-storey basement building with chamfered corner has a more or less rectangular floor plan and a composite roof with slates in Dutch bond. The facades are constructed of machine-made brick with a sandstone plinth. The facades are articulated by whitewashed natural stone ashlar courses with diamond bosses and broad cornice strings between the storeys. The accent falls on the chamfered corner with a glazed panel door in a portico. On both street sides two large high display windows adjoin. At Steenbergsestraat the facade follows the street line obliquely. In this one window is fitted, in the adjacent bay a cushion-panelled door with high sandstone staircase, the access to the upper storeys. Above the lintels of windows and doors are large round arch windows with springer stones, moulded surrounds and acanthus-leaf-shaped keystones. These correspond with the intermediate storey, appearing as a high reveal. The corner is accentuated by a rectangular bay window over two storeys, resting on worked consoles and covered by moulded coping slabs. The wooden stiles are provided with carved ornaments. On either side of the bay windows are four T-windows, of which the wooden divisions have been replaced by plastic. On the second storey these are arched windows, above these straight-headed windows, with lintel and segmental arch, below the windows window aprons of various form. The window bay in the chamfered side and that above the door at Steenbergsestraat have a corresponding appearance. The decorative element is enhanced by a total of four balconies, on the third storey with a natural stone and above with a cast iron balustrade, carried by heavy worked consoles. Two are located entirely on the left at the O.L. Vrouwestraat side, in this slightly projecting facade section of two window axes. The other two balconies are placed in the centre. A narrow frieze is formed by a moulded profile and a series of ornamental knobs. The substantial cornice is supported everywhere by brackets, also in the corner bay, below which the name Mariahoek is painted. The bay is crowned by a high tower roof with aedicule window. On the east side a dormer with round arch window is placed centrally. Far left on the south side is a spout gable with double round arch window and ornamental spheres and above the initials L.C. and the date 1900. The side facade on the Steenbergsestraat side is blind with still visible fragments of an advertising painting of "Simon de Wit".

Valuation.

The former shop with hotel is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of socio-economic and typological development, notably the urban scaling-up in the period around 1900. The building has architectural-historical value because of the style and position in the oeuvre of architect Van Genk and because of the particular ornamentation. The ensemble value lies in the particular significance for the appearance of the city. The building is of importance because of the integrity of the exterior and in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the urban environment. The value of the building finally lies in the typological rarity.
