Omschrijving
Inleiding.
Erboven bijbehorende verlichtingsarmaturen in Art Décostijl.

Description
Introduction.
The DR. MOLLERLYCEUM was built in 1926 in Expressionist style after designs by architects J. Wielders and Q. J. Horsten. The building marks the corner of Bolwerk Zuid with Bagijnhofstraat and Legrandstraat. The school was built on uneven terrain, which is visibly evident internally in level differences that are bridged by small staircases. Around 1980 the building was substantially extended at the rear.
Description.
The one to three-storey building has an L-shaped floor plan with a lively variation of building volumes. The facades are constructed of machine-made brick, the majority of the windows have wooden decorative frames. The roofs are flat, finished with red roof tiles. The highest building mass on the Bolwerk side has very steep hipped roofs with red improved Dutch roof tiles. This main building is executed with bilateral symmetry. The central section with entrance projects forward. On the main building emphasis falls on the broad central section, in which the varnished double doors with decorated kick plates are placed. The doors are provided with leaded glass panes, beside them side windows with small glazing bars. Above this whole a lintel with the name in metal lettering: Dr. Moller Lyceum. A tall rectangular mass rises here more narrowly, the rising character is further emphasised by a vertical stair window. On either side of the entrance there is a ground floor with small six-pane glazing bar windows. The storey above has band windows with small glazing bars and wooden frames, continuing into the risalit. The corners of the brickwork are rounded and partly built up higher, finished with roof tiles. On the second storey, actually the space beneath the roof, on either side in the roof plane there are two narrower rows of windows with rear-pane division. The side facades of this tall section show that the hipped roofs run lower at the rear. In the middle of the attic storey there are three coupled nine-pane windows, below on the left at the rounded corner a ladder window.
The left side facade is connected by a single-storey passage under a flat roof to the former caretaker's residence. The building mass is terminated on the right by a single-storey rectangular building section, the library, with high-set band windows with wooden frames, which turn the corner. This is followed by a two-storey building section of six window bays. After a high plinth with ornamental brickwork follow rows with twenty-four-pane windows, on the storey above lying three-pane windows. In the subsequent single-storey building mass there are two windows with small glazing bar division and the western entrance, which was originally decorated like the main entrance.
The main entrance gives access to a draught vestibule, after which a monumental hall follows with on both sides wide staircases. On the ground lie red tiles with a decorative border in black and beige. The tall glazed tilework wainscoting is flame-decorated ochre yellow. Where the hall continues on both sides as a central passage in the length of the building, stand stylised limestone corner sculptures, St. Gertrudis and a Sacred Heart sculpture. The sculptures were supplied in 1928 by P. van Os from Tilburg. Above these corresponding light fittings in Art Deco style. At both sculptures facade stones from 1927. The panel doors which give access to the classrooms have Art Deco motifs. When one walks through the hall with at the end corner windows and washbasins, and a staircase is descended, another facade stone in honour of the Irene brigade who inhabited and restored the school in 1944-1945. The stairs are of granite, the balustrade of ornamental ironwork. Also on the storey the corridors are provided with the original tilework. The central heating radiators are placed in niches reserved for this purpose. The attic has on the left and right of the stairwell in arched form executed pine wood roof truss structures in the drawing studios. Further south in the building one must descend various small staircases.
The school grounds are enclosed on the side of the Bolwerk and of Legrandstraat by a low brick wall dating from the time of construction in which Expressionist wrought ironwork is incorporated.
