Inleiding
WINKELWONING, bestaande uit een winkelruimte en bovenwoningen, in 1919 gebouwd naar ontwerp van architect W. DE VRIND Jr. Het gebouw kenmerkt zich door invloeden van de Amsterdamse School, zoals de toepassing van diverse metselverbanden en siermetselwerk, de hoekoplossing met uitgesneden portiek en hangende erker met koepelbekroning en stalen ramen met glas-in-lood.
Het pand is gesitueerd op de zuidelijke hoek van de Roggestraat en de Walstraat en vormt het sluitstuk van de aaneengesloten gevelwanden van beide straten.
Omschrijving
WINKELWONING van vier bouwlagen en zolderverdieping op rechthoekig grondplan. De zolderverdieping heeft een afgeplat schilddak belegd met leien in Maasdekking, en een hoge, in siermetselwerk uitgevoerde schoorsteen aan de zijde van de Roggestraat.
De roodbruine bakstenen gevels zijn in staand verband gemetseld met verdiept gelegen voegen. De gevels worden geleed door zware doorgaande bakstenen 'pilasters' (uitgemetselde koppen in de eerste bouwlaag, muizetandkoppen in de verdiepingen) met fantasie-kapitelen (tweezijdig uitgemetselde bakstenen en trapsgewijze bekroning). De gevels hebben een granieten plint aan de onderzijde en worden aan de bovenzijde beëindigd door een uitkragende borstwering met muizetandlijst en rollaag. De hoek is op de verdiepingen uitgevoerd als een vierzijdige erker met eenzelfde opbouw als de flankerende gevelvlakken en wordt bekroond door een achtzijdige helm met piron van lood. De hoeken van de erker worden geaccentueerd door elkaar kruisende bakstenen.
De invullingen van de muuropeningen in de eerste bouwlaag zijn allemaal vernieuwd. De ingang in de afgeschuinde hoek wordt afgesloten door een grote geprofileerde natuurstenen kraagsteen, welke zich naar beneden toe verjongt tussen kegelvormige decoraties. De eerste bouwlaag wordt beëindigd door een uitgemetselde rollaag.
De gevel aan de Roggestraat heeft twee vensterassen, en de gevel aan de Walstraat heeft vier vensterassen. Description
SHOP WITH FLAT of four storeys and an attic storey on a rectangular ground plan. The attic storey has a half-hipped roof clad with slate in Dutch bond, and a tall chimney executed in decorative brickwork on the side of the Roggestraat.
The reddish-brown brick facades are laid in stretcher bond with recessed joints. The facades are articulated by heavy continuous brick 'pilasters' (projecting headers in the first storey, rat-tooth pattern in the upper storeys) with decorative capitals (brick projected on two sides and stepped crowning). The facades have a granite plinth at the base and are terminated at the top by a projecting parapet with rat-tooth moulding and roll moulding. The corner is executed on the upper storeys as a four-sided bay window with the same articulation as the flanking facade sections and is crowned by an octagonal helm with a lead weather vane. The corners of the bay window are accentuated by intersecting brickwork.
The infills of the wall openings in the first storey have all been renewed. The entrance in the chamfered corner is closed off by a large profiled natural stone corbel, which tapers downwards between cone-shaped decorations. The first storey is terminated by a projecting roll moulding.
The facade on the Roggestraat has two window bays, and the facade on the Walstraat has four window bays. All window openings on the upper storeys have angled granite drip mouldings with two projecting brick courses beneath them, and are closed off by two-brick roll mouldings. The second and third storeys have steel horizontal sliding windows with three-panel coloured leaded glass fanlights in wooden frames; the fourth storey has horizontal sliding windows with chevron-arched glazing bars and coloured leaded glass at the top. The windows in the corner bay window are narrow, single-pane variants of the windows in the flanking facades. The windows still retain their original iron window catches with curled-over ends.
The INTERIOR of the upper-storey dwellings includes, among other features, a stairwell with stepped rising wainscoting, simple stucco ceilings with mouldings, wooden fireplaces and panelled doors with profiled frames and terminating cornices.
