Inleiding

Description
Introduction
ARNHEM OPEN-AIR SCHOOL with OPEN-AIR CLASSROOMS, situated north of the Bosweg in the extreme south of park Klarenbeek. Klarenbeek has been owned by the municipality of Arnhem since 1886 as a public walking park. The school is located on a historic building site; archaeological investigations in 1930 and 1980 brought to light remains of the Carthusian monastery "Monnikhuizen". The nearby former hotel-pension "Monnikhuizen" from 1907 forms part of the open-air school but does not qualify for national monument protection.
The open-air school for chronically ill children was built in 1929-1930 on behalf of the "Arnhem Open-Air School Association" and was opened on 3 September 1930. The design in the style of functionalism was by architect H.B. VAN BROEKHUIZEN (deputy director Municipal Works Arnhem). Van Broekhuizen initially developed in the style of the Amsterdam School (Creutzbergschool, Vijverlaan 30 in Arnhem). Later his style became more functional, as can be seen in the present school in the style of the New Building. In its original design the school consisted of a symmetrically arranged building with three classrooms, four light halls to the west of this and four open-air classrooms to the northeast of the school building. Later a fourth classroom was added to the school building. The light halls have been demolished. Two examples of the classrooms have been preserved.
Description
SCHOOL BUILDING of one storey on a complex ground plan, consisting of four block-shaped classrooms connected to each other by lower corridors. The plastered brick facades are painted white. The east, south and west facades of the classrooms consist largely of blue-painted ten-pane doors and multi-pane windows of iron. The six-panel folding glass doors on the south side can be completely slid back. The canopy above these sliding doors is at the same height as the flat roof of the corridors. The somewhat recessed projections of the classrooms are provided with low window strips with multi-pane tilt windows. The north facades of the classrooms are blank.
In contrast to the transparent facades of the classrooms, the corridors are executed more closed. The south facades have series of ten small single-pane tilt windows. In front of these, tall and shallow flower boxes have been installed. Each corridor has an entrance on the north side with two toilet windows on either side.
The school building possesses a number of authentic INTERIOR ELEMENTS, such as two corridors with a black/white tiled floor in geometric patterns, tiles in yellow and cobalt blue against the lower part of the walls, toilet groups on either side of the entrance, wooden doors with a vertical strip of small square windows and red-painted rails; classrooms with floor and ceiling heating and cupboards with matching wooden doors.
The rectangular OPEN-AIR CLASSROOMS, excavated into the slope, both have a white-plastered brick storage cupboard with a clamped double door. The school boards have been renewed. The brick retaining walls and ground covering were added later.
Valuation
ARNHEM OPEN-AIR SCHOOL with two open-air CLASSROOMS from 1929-1931.
- Of architectural-historical value as a fine and well-preserved example of a school building in the style of the New Building with important characteristics including: attention in the design to the admission of light and air, large glazed areas and window strips of iron and glass, block forms with flat roofs and white-plastered facades without ornament, use of primary colours in the interior.
The object is of great importance for the oeuvre of architect H.B. VAN BROEKHUIZEN who designed several valuable schools for the municipal works of Arnhem. The Arnhem Open-Air School came into being at the same time as the Open-Air School in Amsterdam-South by architect J. Duiker, and is related to his work.
- Of urban-planning value because of its striking location on an open and undulating site in the southern extension of park Klarenbeek.
- Of cultural-historical value as a particular expression in terms of type and purpose of a school building in which shape was given to growing attention to the health of the (chronically ill) child: optimal supply of light and air and open-air facilities. The open-air school was in this form during the interwar period a well-known phenomenon. As a rare well-preserved example of this, the Arnhem Open-Air School is of great importance for the cultural and architectural history of the Netherlands.
