Inleiding

Dudok.

Introduction

OFFICE BUILDING "De Nederlanden van 1845", built in 1938-1939 according to a design by architect W.M. DUDOK (1884-1974). The building has a business-like appearance with influences from the New Building movement: a combination of two curved building volumes with horizontal rows of windows and a glazed staircase. After Berlage's death, Dudok became the most important architect for "De Nederlanden van 1845". He designed offices for this insurance company in Arnhem (1938-1939), Amsterdam (1938-1939, not executed), Rotterdam (1949-1952) and The Hague (1951-1953, renovation).

The building is located on the north side of the park belt in place of the former ramparts and situated at the corner of Willemsplein and Oude Stationsstraat on a sloping site of irregular shape. The light yellow tiled facades follow the building line and visually align with the plastered 19th century town houses in the facade wall.

Description

OFFICE BUILDING, consisting of a main building of five storeys at the front, a two-storey left side wing and a staircase of six storeys on the right side. All building masses have a flat roof.

The rectangular, gently curved main building at Willemsplein was originally crowned by the letter ornament: "DE NEDERLANDEN VAN 1845". The curved FRONT FACADE with light yellow tile cladding has a horizontal layout of long rows of rectangular windows. The original steel frames have been replaced by plastic examples. The first and second storeys are taller than the storeys above. The first storey is clad in black marble and has an entrance in the rounded left corner (renewed infill) and a portico cut across two storeys on the right side. The portico has a granite staircase of eight steps, marble cladding against the walls, a renewed entrance and a round light in the second storey. Between both entrances are six large rectangular windows (single-pane) under a continuous flat concrete lintel. The large rectangular windows in the second storey (21-pane) correspond with the windows in the first storey and are closed off by a continuous concrete lintel. In the left bay (above the entrance) is a nine-pane band window. The third, fourth and fifth storeys have a reduced storey height and each has sixteen rectangular windows. The tiled LEFT SIDE FACADE has a curved balcony with steel balcony door and flanking combined window in the second storey, a square steel window and door in the third storey (access to flat roof of side wing) and two square steel windows in the fourth and fifth storeys. The white plastered REAR FACADE of the main building has large fourteen-pane windows in the second storey and in the storeys above each has five steel band windows.

The two-storey side wing at Oude Stationsstraat has a curved FRONT FACADE with light yellow tile cladding and black marble plinth, in which two entrances and seven rectangular windows in the first storey (all with renewed infill) and one round light, eight rectangular windows and a cut-out balcony in the second storey. The side wing has a blunt angle at the rear. This is adjoined by a single-storey section with an iron railing along the roof edge.

The staircase has a first storey with black marble cladding, a semicircular fully glazed front facade, a light yellow tiled right side facade (some windows of glass blocks) and a straight closed rear facade with curved extension of glass blocks at the level of the first storey. The modernised INTERIOR still has the original reinforced concrete skeleton construction and brick infills; toilet facilities at the back of the side wing; a vestibule clad in white marble on the right in the main building, with adjoining a semicircular open staircase (white marble and chrome tube railing) to the first floor, and a glazed staircase (granite main staircase, light blue tiled walls, chrome tube railing) to the other floors.

Valuation

OFFICE BUILDING "De Nederlanden van 1845" from 1938-1939.

The building is characterised by a business-like, functional layout with influences from the New Building movement, a clear coherence between exterior and interior, well-proportioned forms and exceptional use of materials. The building is of particular importance for the series of office designs that the insurance company "De Nederlanden van 1845" commissioned from nationally known architects in the twentieth century.
