Inleiding
GRAND CAFE-RESTAURANT "Riche", in 1883 gebouwd in eclectische stijl. Het pand bevindt zich aan de zuidzijde van de plantsoengordel ter plaatse van de vroegere omwalling, en is gesitueerd op de westelijke hoek van het Willemsplein en de Jansstraat. De hoofdingang naar het café bevond zich oorspronkelijk in het midden van de voorgevel en is omstreeks 1912 verplaatst naar het belendende pand aan de rechter zijde (thans een moderne invulling met de ingang naar het restaurant op de eerste verdieping) en recentelijk naar de zijgevel aan de Jansstraat.
Omschrijving
CAFE-RESTAURANT van twee hoge bouwlagen en zolderverdieping op nagenoeg rechthoekig grondplan. De zolderverdieping heeft een afgeplat schilddak. De dakschilden zijn belegd met gesmoorde verbeterde Hollandse pannen en voorzien van enkele moderne dakramen.
De symmetrisch ingedeelde VOORGEVEL heeft in de eerste bouwlaag drie gemoderniseerde puien: enkelruits ramen met drie- of zesruits bovenlichten met gekleurd glas-in-lood in geometrische motieven. De muurdammen zijn geblokt en ruw gepleisterd en voorzien van een grijs geschilderde plint. Een over de volle gevelbreedte doorlopend balkon met balustrade wordt ondersteund door vier forse consoles. De consoles zijn versierd met groeven, diamantkoppen, eier- en bladlijsten, een afhangende knop met eierlijst en een leeuwekop aan de voorzijde. De verdieping is vijf traveeën breed en wordt geleed door gekoppelde hoekpilasters en een middenrisaliet van drie vensterassen met vier vrijstaande gecanneleerde zuilen. Zowel de zuilen als de pilasters zijn geplaatst op basementen (met bladmotieven) en hebben composiete-kapitelen. Achter de kapitelen van de zuilen bevindt zich een geprofileerde lijst met vlakken. Deze lijst zet zich aan weerszijden van de middenrisaliet voort als meanderlijst. De zuilen dragen een hoofdgestel: een fries met vier versierde blokken en drie festoenen en een geprofileerde kroonlijst op blokvormige 'klossen'. Het hoofdgestel wordt bekroond door een attiek waarop een schijngeveltje met fronton. De ornamenten op de hoeken (obelisken) en op het fronton (palmet) zijn verwijderd. De middenrisaliet heeft tussen de zuilen drie rechthoekige vensters met rondboogvormig afgesloten bovenlichten. De geprofileerde stuc-omlijstingen met sluitstenen van de bovenlichten zijn met elkaar verbonden door een geprofileerde cordonlijst. De traveeën links en rechts van de middenrisaliet bezitten elk één recht gesloten schuifdeur (enkelruits) met een rond bovenlicht erboven. Deur en bovenlicht zijn met elkaar verbonden door een stuc-omlijsting, bestaande uit fantasie-pilasters, een sluitsteen met cirkelmotieven boven de deur, een in- en uitgezwenkt veld met geprofileerde afsluitende lijst.
De LINKER ZIJGEVEL (aan de Jansstraat) is twee traveeën breed en heeft een vergelijkbare opbouw als de voorgevel: geblokt gepleisterde eerste bouwlaag met geprofileerde cordonlijst, een bakstenen (kruisverband) tweede bouwlaag met gestucte meanderlijst en geprofileerde kroonlijst aan de bovenzijde (bakstenen attiek gaat schuil achter de kroonlijst). De muuropeningen in de eerste bouwlaag worden afgesloten door ijzeren lateien en hebben gemoderniseerde invullingen. De twee grote tweeruits vensters op de verdieping hebben een rond bovenlicht en een gestucte omlijsting, zoals de schuifdeuren in de voorgevel. Ter hoogte van de lekdorpels is een waterlijst aangebracht en ter hoogte van de bovendorpel een geprofileerde cordonlijst.
Het INTERIEUR bezit onder meer in de tweede bouwlaag een plafond, bestaande uit op muurstijlen opgelegde geprofileerde balken met versierde sleutelstukken (kraal- en kwartholprofiel). De vakken tussen de balken zijn voorzien van een geprofileerd cassettenplafond.

GRAND CAFE-RESTAURANT "Riche", built in 1883 in eclectic style. Description
CAFE-RESTAURANT of two high storeys and attic storey on a nearly rectangular ground plan. The attic storey has a clipped hipped roof. The roof tiles are covered with smoked improved Dutch tiles and provided with several modern roof windows.
The symmetrically arranged FRONT FACADE has in the first storey three modernised shop fronts: single-glazed windows with three- or six-pane fanlights with coloured leaded glass in geometric motifs. The wall piers are rusticated and roughly rendered and provided with a grey-painted plinth. A balcony with balustrade running across the full width of the facade is supported by four substantial consoles. The consoles are decorated with fluting, diamond bosses, egg-and-dart moulding, a hanging drop with egg moulding and a lion head at the front. The storey is five bays wide and is articulated by coupled corner pilasters and a central risalit of three window axes with four freestanding fluted columns. Both the columns and the pilasters are placed on bases (with leaf motifs) and have composite capitals. Behind the capitals of the columns is a profiled moulding with fields. This moulding continues on either side of the central risalit as a meander moulding. The columns carry an entablature: a frieze with four decorated blocks and three festoons and a profiled cornice on block-shaped 'blocks'. The entablature is crowned by an attic with a small false gable with pediment. The ornaments at the corners (obelisks) and on the pediment (palmette) have been removed. The central risalit has three rectangular windows between the columns with round-arched fanlights. The profiled stucco surrounds with keystones of the fanlights are connected to each other by a profiled string course. The bays to the left and right of the central risalit each have one straight closed sash door (single-glazed) with a round fanlight above it. Door and fanlight are connected by a stucco surround, consisting of fantasy pilasters, a keystone with circular motifs above the door, an indented and projecting field with profiled closing moulding.
The LEFT SIDE FACADE (on Jansstraat) is two bays wide and has a similar structure to the front facade: rusticated rendered first storey with profiled string course, a brick (English bond) second storey with stucco meander moulding and profiled cornice at the top (brick attic is hidden behind the cornice). The wall openings in the first storey are closed by iron lintels and have modernised infills. The two large two-pane windows on the storey have a round fanlight and a stucco surround, as with the sash doors in the front facade. At the height of the drip edges a drip moulding is installed and at the height of the upper edges a profiled string course.
The INTERIOR possesses among other things in the second storey a ceiling, consisting of profiled beams laid on wall corbels with decorated keystones (bead and quarter-hollow moulding). The panels between the beams are provided with a profiled casemented ceiling.
