Inleiding
WINKELPAND gebouwd in 1922-1923 naar het ontwerp van de toenmalige ouddirecteur van Gemeentewerken ir. W.F.C. Schaap in opdracht van de Firma in damesmode B.J. Voss & Zn. De imponerende architectuur van de voormalige kledingzaak vertoont stijl-invloeden van Um 1800 en Art Deco en vormt een uitzondering in het oeuvre van Schaap, die zich in deze periode vooral door de Amsterdamse School liet beïnvloeden. De stijl van het pand sloot echter perfect aan bij de chique reputatie van de Firma Voss. De plaatselijke pers was verrukt over de komst van het deftige modehuis naar Arnhem. De Arnhemse Courant verwoordde dit als volgt: "Het is een getuigenis, dat zij (de Firma Voss) Arnhem beschouwen als centrum van een streek met financieel draagkrachtige bevolking, welke gelokt door den goeden naam bij haar haar inkoopen komt doen". De voormalige kledingzaak is gelegen op de hoek van de Rijnstraat en de Grote Oord, die samen met de Vijzelstraat en de Weverstraat een kruising vormen. Oorspronkelijk was het verkoopgedeelte verdeeld over de begane grond, de eerste en een gedeelte van de tweede verdieping. Het andere gedeelte van de tweede verdieping was ingericht als "uittekenruimte". Het naaiatelier bevond zich op zolder.
Omschrijving
WINKELPAND op een nagenoeg rechthoekig grondplan met een scherpe afgeronde hoek. Het pand bevat een kelder, vier bouwlagen en een zolderverdieping onder een plat dak met aan beide zijden hoge gebroken dakschilden met leien in maasdekking en twee vrijwel over de gehele breedte doorlopende stenen dakkapellen, links met zes en rechts met twaalf vensters. De iets terugspringende kwartronde hoek bevat vijf bouwlagen en wordt op goothoogte bekroond door een ronde toren onder een koperen koepeldak. Het pand heeft een betonskelet en de gevels zijn opgetrokken in blokken van gele zandsteen. De hoge plint is bekleed met granieten platen. De winkelpuien zijn gedeeltelijk gewijzigd. Voor de vensters van de tweede verdieping bevindt zich aan beide zijden een vrijwel over de gehele breedte van de gevel doorlopend Frans balkon met smeedijzeren hek op een vooruitspringende richel met gestileerde bladlijst. De verder vlakke gevels worden afgesloten door een ver overstekende zandstenen goot, waaronder zich wederom een gestileerde bladlijst bevindt.
De asymmetrisch ingedeelde LINKER ZIJGEVEL bezit aan de linkerzijde een tot aan de bladlijst doorlopend terugliggend gedeelte, waarin zich een drie vensters hoog veld bevindt. Het veld wordt aan weerszijden begrensd door gebosseerde stijlen en aan de onderkant afgesloten door een kroonlijst op geornamenteerde S-vormige consoles. Op de borstweringen tussen de drie vensters zijn gebeeldhouwde zandstenen reliëfs met plantaardige motieven aangebracht. De drie vensters bevatten van beneden naar boven achtereenvolgens een 9-ruits raam met 6-ruits bovenlicht, een 9-ruits raam met 3-ruits bovenlicht en een 12-ruits raam. Alle ramen zijn van staal. Onder het veld bevindt zich een ingangspartij met een door een geornamenteerde kroonlijst afgesloten dienstingang met een gewijzigde deur. Boven de kroonlijst bevinden zich een geribbeld veld en een 6-ruits rondboogvormig afgesloten stalen bovenlicht in een parelrandvormige omlijsting. Afgezien van dit iets terugliggende deel telt de linker zijgevel twee brede traveeën ter hoogte van begane grond en eerste verdieping en vijf smalle traveeën ter hoogte van de tweede en derde verdieping. De pui op de begane grond bevat twee etalageramen in een stalen kozijn, afgesloten door een geprofileerde lijst en een geribbelde rand. De eerste verdieping bevat twee door een zandstenen stijl gescheiden vensters, ieder met drie, eveneens door zandstenen stijlen gescheiden, stalen draairamen, waarvan het middelste tevens een uitklapbaar bovendeel bezit. Op de tweede verdieping bevinden zich vijf stalen balkondeuren met een lage borstwering en 3-ruits bovenlicht. Hierboven bevinden zich vijf 12-ruits stalen draairamen.
De indeling van de RECHTER ZIJGEVEL is vrijwel hetzelfde als van de linker zijgevel. De rechter zijgevel bevat echter geen terugliggend gedeelte en is breder. Hier telt de eerste verdieping vier brede traveeën, terwijl de tweede en de derde verdieping acht smalle traveeën bevatten. De indeling van de pui op de begane grond lijkt gewijzigd. Voor het overige is de indeling en detaillering van de balkondeuren en ramen hetzelfde als bij de linker zijgevel.
Bij beide zijgevels is uiterst links en uiterst rechts de hemelwaterafvoer, bestaande uit een vierkante zinken pijp, in het vlak van de gevel opgenomen. Ter hoogte van de plint is de pijp afgedekt met een smalle ijzeren plaat met golvende iets uitgebogen rand en driepuntige bevestigingsdelen.
De kwartronde HOEKGEVEL bezit een deels gewijzigde ingangspartij. Deze wordt geflankeerd door twee gecanneleerde kwartronde zuilen met kapitelen met palmetten. Op de zuilen staan twee bronzen beelden, vrouwenfiguren die de Winter en de Zomer voorstellen. De ingangspartij wordt afgesloten door een gestileerde bladlijst. Hierboven bevindt zich een over drie verdiepingen doorlopend driedelig venster. De drie, door gebosseerde zandstenen stijlen gescheiden, hoge smalle stalen kozijnen bevatten afwisselend een roedenverdeling en cassetten ter hoogte van de borstweringen. Ter hoogte van de eerste verdieping bevat het venster 15-ruits ramen, waarvoor zich geornamenteerde balkonhekjes bevinden, ter hoogte van de tweede en derde verdieping zijn de ramen 12-ruits. Het venster wordt afgesloten door een uitspringende gestileerde bladlijst, waarop zich drie gebeeldhouwde wapenschilden bevinden. Boven de bladlijst begint tevens de ronde torenbekroning, die voorzien is van een rijk geornamenteerde horizontale band, waarin zich vier rechthoekige vensters bevinden met stalen ramen met een kruisvormige roedenverdeling. De torenbekroning wordt afgesloten door een rand op een gestileerde eierlijst.
Het INTERIEUR van het winkelpand is gewijzigd.

SHOP BUILDING erected in 1922-1923 according to the design of the then former director of Municipal Works Ir. W.F.C. Schaap commissioned by the Firm in ladies' fashion B.J. Voss & Zn. The impressive architecture of the former clothing store displays stylistic influences from around 1800 and Art Deco and forms an exception in Schaap's oeuvre, who in this period was mainly influenced by the Amsterdam School. The style of the building however perfectly matched the exclusive reputation of the Voss Firm. The local press was delighted about the arrival of the distinguished fashion house in Arnhem. SHOP BUILDING on an almost rectangular plan with a sharp rounded corner. The building contains a basement, four storeys and an attic storey beneath a flat roof with on both sides high hipped roofs with slate tiles in Dutch bond and two continuous stone roof dormers running almost the full width of the building, on the left with six and on the right with twelve windows. The slightly recessed quarter-round corner contains five storeys and is crowned at gutter height by a round tower beneath a copper dome roof. The building has a concrete skeleton and the facades are built up in blocks of yellow sandstone. The high plinth is clad with granite plates. The shop fronts have been partly altered. Before the windows of the second storey there is on both sides a French balcony running almost the full width of the facade with wrought-iron railings on a projecting ridge with stylised leaf moulding. The further flat facades are finished with a far-overhanging sandstone gutter, beneath which is again a stylised leaf moulding.
The asymmetrically laid out LEFT SIDE FACADE possesses on the left side a recessed section running up to the leaf moulding, in which there is a field of three windows high. The field is bounded on either side by rusticated pilasters and closed off at the bottom by a cornice on ornamented S-shaped consoles. On the parapets between the three windows carved sandstone reliefs with plant-like motifs have been applied. The three windows contain from bottom to top consecutively a 9-pane window with 6-pane fanlight, a 9-pane window with 3-pane fanlight and a 12-pane window. All windows are steel. Beneath the field is an entrance arrangement with a service entrance closed off by an ornamented cornice with an altered door. Above the cornice there is a fluted field and a 6-pane round-arched closed steel fanlight in a pearl-beaded frame. Apart from this slightly recessed part the left side facade has two wide bays at the height of ground floor and first floor and five narrow bays at the height of the second and third storey. The frontage on the ground floor contains two display windows in a steel frame, closed off by a profiled moulding and a fluted border. The first floor contains two windows separated by a sandstone pilaster, each with three, also separated by sandstone pilasters, steel casement windows, of which the middle one also has a folding upper section. On the second storey there are five steel balcony doors with a low parapet and 3-pane fanlight. Above these are five 12-pane steel casement windows.
The layout of the RIGHT SIDE FACADE is virtually the same as the left side facade. The right side facade however contains no recessed section and is wider. Here the first floor has four wide bays, while the second and third storey contain eight narrow bays. The layout of the frontage on the ground floor appears altered. For the rest the layout and detailing of the balcony doors and windows is the same as with the left side facade.
With both side facades at the far left and far right the rainwater drainage, consisting of a square zinc pipe, is incorporated in the plane of the facade. At the height of the plinth the pipe is covered with a narrow iron plate with wavy slightly curved-out edge and three-pointed fastening elements.
The quarter-round CORNER FACADE has a partly altered entrance arrangement. This is flanked by two fluted quarter-round columns with capitals with palmettes. On the columns stand two bronze figures, female figures representing Winter and Summer. The entrance arrangement is closed off by a stylised leaf moulding. Above this is a three-part window running through three storeys. The three, separated by rusticated sandstone pilasters, tall narrow steel frames contain alternately a glazing bar pattern and cassettes at the height of the parapets. At the height of the first floor the window contains 15-pane windows, before which there are ornamented balcony railings, at the height of the second and third storey the windows are 12-pane. The window is closed off by a projecting stylised leaf moulding, on which three carved coat of arms shields are located. Above the leaf moulding the round tower surround also begins, which is provided with a richly ornamented horizontal band, in which there are four rectangular windows with steel windows with a cross-shaped glazing bar pattern. The tower surround is closed off by a border on a stylised egg moulding.
