The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

RESIDENTIAL HOUSE with elements of Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance style. It was built in 1885 by the parish council of the St. Lambertus parish. The architect is presumably Petrus Johannes van Genk, who also built the church. Mayor Van Glabbeeck was in 1888 owner and resident of the house. Around 1950 it was in use as a convent of the catechists of Breda. The house stands in the centre of Etten with the front facade on the Markt directly south-west of the approach drive to the St. Lambertuskerk.

Description.

The residential house on an L-shaped floor plan has one and two storeys and a complex gabled roof between spout gables. On both the north-east and south-west sides of the house there is a square tower-like extension under tall tower roofs. Entrance section under roof with asymmetrical pitch. The roofs are covered with natural slate. The outer walls consist of good quality brickwork in bond pattern with lime-stone dressings and a hardstone plint. Asymmetrical front facade with on the left a spout gable within which a pointed arch is inscribed. Entrance section with monumental front door. At the back of the house a conservatory. Wall openings with above them arch panels of ornamental brickwork in multi-coloured brick. Balcony anchors of ornamental wrought iron. Of the interior the following components are of monument quality: the marble hall, various stucco ceilings with ceiling rose ornaments; ornamented black marble chimney mantels in front and back room, roof truss and four-colour artificial stone floor tiles in conservatory. In the rear tower extension, which has two storeys and its own staircase, were located the storage and service rooms for staff.

Valuation.

The house presumably built to the design of P.J. van Genk is of general importance because of its cultural-historical value as a representative of social-economic development. It is of architectural importance because of building type and style, especially because of the neo-gothic arch motif in the front facade. It has ensemble value as part of the Markt of Etten-Leur.
